Today (1/22) at 4:00 p.m. I was pleased to see a dark morph adult FERRUGINOUS
HAWK as it cruised regally over my Capitola neighborhood, heading inland
northwest from the coast. Dark morph individuals have only been reported a
handful of times in SCZ.

Subject: Tufted Duck, Harlequin Duck

Dear MBBers:
I went to see the TUFTED DUCK at Westlake Park in Santa Cruz; he is indeed
much more resplendently tufted than he was in December! I also relocated
the HARLEQUIN DUCK in Monterey, sitting on, and sometimes swimming aside, a
blue bouy amidst the boats between the wharf and the breakwater. I watched
the Harlequin intermittently from 2:30-4:00. I also shamelessly used the
bird's beauty for missionary purposes, converting some folks to birding with
his help. Could not refind the LONG-TAILED DUCK this afternoon, despite
searching the entire area from west of the Hotel to east of the wharf.
I have a friend for whom the Harlequin would be a life bird, but who can't
get down to Monterey for a few days yet. So updates on its continued
presence are appreciated.
On a related note, have the Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrows been relocated
lately? Are the birds that were present in December likely to be
over-wintering?
