[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Canada Geese From: Pacekiner(AT)aol.com Date: 20 Jan 2002 2:28am While in downtown Watsonville on Freedom Boulevard this evening around 5:30 p.m. (01/19/02), I saw a flock of between 40 to 50 CANADA GEESE heading East. Possibly the trio of geese at Westlake Pond that "chased" us were calling in reinforcements, David? ^V^ Happy Birding Ya'll ^V^ Paula Kiner Watsonville ((To unsubscribe MBB, send the command UNSUBSCRIBE MBB <YOUR MBB EMAIL ADDRESS> to <majordomo(AT)darwin.ucsc.edu>.))
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Tufted Duck From: SCRE(AT)aol.com Date: 20 Jan 2002 2:45am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- The TUFTED DUCK and 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE continue today at Westlake Pond in Santa Cruz. No sign of the Canada's, maybe one of the neighbors finally got tired of them? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: RB Sapsuckers From: "dave kodl" <ddk0829(AT)cruzio.com> Date: 20 Jan 2002 10:01am This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Just had two RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS being harrassed by at leat three of = my plentiful ACORN WOODPECKERS. I'd previously seen only one sapsucker = on three occasions 2-3 weeks ago. I watched for about a minute and = a-half as the sapsuckers would land on one of three adjacent pine = trunks, only to be driven to another tree. Within 10 seconds they would = be forced to yet another of the trees. This repeated about five times - = a nice flurry of red, black, and white with perfect lighting. Finally the sapsuckers flew to a eucalyptus about 75' away. All is calm = at the moment. Would someone follow-up with their knowledge of the = "territoriality"/dominance of these two species. In the year and a-half = I've been at this location - Corralitos vicinity - I hadn't seen a = sapsucker until three weeks ago. The Acorn Woodpeckers have always been = numerous, and I've counted up to 7 or 8 individuals at once. ----DELETED text/html MIME SECTION---- ((To unsubscribe MBB, send the command UNSUBSCRIBE MBB <YOUR MBB EMAIL ADDRESS> to <majordomo(AT)darwin.ucsc.edu>.))

This = bird was at a friends house in Watsonville/Corralitos area. She said = this is the first time she has seen one at this location. A very tame = bird, I got within 10 feet to get these pictures. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Eastern Phoebe at Merced NWR From: "Alexander Jr. Cruz" <acruzie(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 20 Jan 2002 10:46pm This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Hi Birders: Ruth Rominger, Lars Tomanek, Dan Karvonen and I birded the San Luis Refuge Complex over the weekend. We were awe-struck by flights of thousands of geese and cranes. We had the best view of our lives of a preening Sora in perfect light. Among thousands of ducks, we were able to pick out a fiery male Eurasian Wigeon. And in Merced NWR, we found a very cooperative Eastern Phoebe foraging near the maintenance buildings at the beginning of the auto tour route. Lars took photos of this bird and I was able to do a sketch (see attached). This bird was seen around 2:30 pm earlier today. In addition to birds, we saw Tule Elk and 3 coyotes.
