I apologize in advance if this is an inappropriate issue for this
mailing list (and if it is, "gently" let me know), but has anybody
here been following the developments with the proposed "Ocean View
Plaza" (formerly known as "Cannery Row Marketplace")?
The only reason I bring it up here is because the developers are proposing
to use desalinization for their water supply, and I'm wondering
what type of issues there might be with de-sal and wildlife?

What a beautiful day! We headed up to the north end of Swanton Rd.,
stopping at the old Davenport pier where we counted at least 14
RED-THROATED LOONS just off- shore. Along the side of the highway, a
TURKEY VULTURE was eating breakfast.
A singing HUTTON'S VIREO , first of the season, drew our attention on
Swanton Rd..
Last Chance Rd. had WESTERN BLUEBIRDS on the wires, a HERMIT WARBLER in
with the TOWNSEND'S, and a MERLIN perched high on the top of a tree.
Back on Swanton we stopped at a trail beside the creek and had 4
VARIED THRUSH flying silently off in front of us.
The pond at the south end had the usual RING-NECKEDS, a male RUDDY in
breeding plumage, 2 EARED GREBES, and a female BUFFLEHEAD .
A quick stop at the UCSC Arboretum turned up a couple of ALLEN'S
HUMMINGBIRDS and a young COOPER'S HAWK. And on a final walk down the
access road to Natural Bridges we watched a GREAT-HORNED OWL watching
people watching butterflies.

"Monterey County" page for a portal to local birding sites, or try the
"links" page to reach various pelagic boat trip operators and providers of
