[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Iceland Gull From: SCRE(AT)aol.com Date: 9 Jan 2002 3:06am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- This afternoon Matt Brady and I went to Moss Landing to try and refined the probable Vega Gull that we had last week. We didn't see it but I am now thoroughly convinced that what we had was not an American Herring Gull (or any other American gull) and one from Eurasia almost certainly Vega Gull. What we did find was 15-20 THAYER's GULLS mainly first winter but with at least one 2nd year and one adult. As I was scanning I picked out a particularly pale individual which immediately struck me as being a possible KUMLIEN's ICELAND GULL. The bird over all was much paler then nearby Thayer's Gulls. The tertials and primaries had quite a bit of white in them. The structure of the bird matched Iceland very well. I wasn't able to get a good look at the bird in flight as it sort of snuck off. It may be an intergrade but I felt that it matched a pure (if there is such a thing) Kumlien's. I was able to get video of the bird but I doubt I will be able to grab any images to post on the web any time soon. Also there was another pale Thayer's which was probably an intergrade but I was paying a bit more attention to the other bird. The flock was on a sandbar at low tide around 4:30 off of Jetty Road. Last night around 12:30 in th woods behind UCSC we heard a couple of WESTERN SCREECH OWLS and also what sounded like a woodpecker pecking. I suspected it to be a mammal except that it sounded exactly like pecking.
