Subject: N. Pygmy Owl
From: "Matt Brady" <zerogambit(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 7 Jan 2002 6:46am
Hi everyone. After seeing some of the recent highlites in the Bay Area and
beyond, David Vander Pluym and I decided to stop by Highland Way to see what
we could turn up in the way of owls. With all the reports by David
Suddjian, we thought that it would be worthwhile to see what we could hear.
At the second spot we pulled over at, which is the first big vista if you're
coming from Highway 17, we heard one NORTHERN PYGMY OWL calling very
brieflly at about 6:30. Although we saw a lot of promissing habitat, we
didn't hear anything else calling.

One displaying male ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD was in the Australian section of the
U.C. Santa Cruz arboretum this afternoon (1/7). He was holding forth in
"Hummingbird Alley" (that stretch of path bordered by the huge grevillea
shrubs), brave amid the numerous male Anna's.

Subject: rare loon, Pinto pelicans, and mystery forest
From: Jeff Davis <jeffndavis(AT)earthlink.net>
Date: 7 Jan 2002 6:27pm
Hi MBBers --
Laird Henkel and I did an aerial survey today (1/7) along the coast
from the Pajaro River to Bodega Bay. Somehow I managed to see what I
believe was an ARCTIC LOON off North Beach in Marin County where one
has been seen recently, while Laird noticed a pair of MARBLED
MURRELETS in the same area. And we both saw 15-20 AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS at Pinto Lake in Watsonville. We also flew over the Soquel
Demonstration State Forest, where David Suddjian has reported many
unusual birds over the past several months. The habitat looked
promising, but we saw nothing from our position several hundred feet
above the trees. I guess we'll have to go to his talk on the 24th to
learn more about Santa Cruz's real Mystery Spot.
