[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: SCZ checklist and 2001 annual list updated From: DSUDDJIAN(AT)aol.com Date: 4 Jan 2002 1:32am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- The Santa Cruz County checklist has been updated through January 1, 2002. It is at: http://santacruzbirdclub.org/chlists.html The 2001 SCZ annual list has also been updated to the end of the year. It was a very good year, as the song says. It is at: http://santacruzbirdclub.org/list01.html Thanks to Barry our webmaster for inputing the updates. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Vega Gull, other rarities From: SCRE(AT)aol.com Date: 4 Jan 2002 2:41am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Matt Brady and I went to Moonglow Dairy today 1/3. The roads are rather muddy getting in and it was pretty hairy even with 4 wheel drive. We had 3 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS along the levee. The more exciting bird however was what was very likely a 1st winter "VEGA" HERRING GULL. It was in a large gull flock across the slough from the dairy. It was also one of the very few 1st winter gulls in the flock. I was first drawn to this bird in that it was a Herring type gull but was rather whitish and extremely well marked. The white head, streaked neck and upp breast, checkered coverts, dark tail band contrasting with a white rump, pink legs, dark bill, overall light plumage and strong pattern, and the tertials and scaps all point to Vega and not an American Herring or Slaty-backed Gull. I tried very hard to find something wrong with the bird for being a Vega and was unable to. Unfortunetly the bird was to far away for video. I hope somebody else has better luck with getting photos of this bird. At Zmudowski State Beach marsh we had 25-30 BARN, 15-20 VIOLET-GREEN, and 1 TREE SWALLOW, 100+ CANVASBACKS. At College Lake we had 2 HOODED MERGANSERS, 1 ROSS'S GOOSE, lots of CANADA GEESE (including 1 CACKLING and two other small subspecies that appeared to be plumaged more like the other Canada's and thus too pale for Cackling though I'm not up on Canada Goose subspecific indentification), 6 BARN SWALLOWS. At Pinto Lake we had 7 AM WHITE PELICANS. We then went to Capitola Beach where in the gull flock we had 1-2 adult THAYER'S GULLs, and then another interesting gull. This bird was a dark-backed gull with bright ORANGE legs and bill. It is probably an odd Western but something felt wrong about it. Also I am not aware of any records of Western Gulls with anything other then pink legs. I'd like to know if anyone out there knows about any records of Western Gull with an odd leg color. This bird is definetly worth a stop by and check it out. I was able to get video of this bird. The TUFTED DUCK continues at Westlake Pond. Very easy to see those gleaming white sides make it easy to pick out with the naked eye. We couldn't find the White-throated Sparrow at Spring and High Street but did have a PEREGRINE fly over. ----DELETED text/html MIME SECTION---- ((To unsubscribe MBB, send the command UNSUBSCRIBE MBB <YOUR MBB EMAIL ADDRESS> to <majordomo(AT)darwin.ucsc.edu>.))

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Red Crossbill From: SCRE(AT)aol.com Date: 4 Jan 2002 6:33pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Today on the UCSC campus in the area around the media center and Clark Kerr Hall I heard 3 different RED CROSSBILLS and one judging from the call notes seemed to reprsent a different type from the other 2. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Red-breasted Sapsucker From: "dave kodl" <ddk0829(AT)cruzio.com> Date: 4 Jan 2002 7:05pm This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- On December 28th a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER appeared on a tree 20' outside = my window in the Corralitos vicinity. In the next 20 minutes it drilled = four holes. When it left I did some reading and learned that it would = come back to drink sap and/or collect insects. I wondered how many days = I would have to wait. Thankfully, twenty minutes later I was at the = same window - at my computer - and observed it return to poke its bill = into each of the holes once or twice. It left within a minute. I've seen the bird twice since then, including New Year's Day morning, = which, along with a HERMIT THRUSH and SONG SPARROW made a nice start to = my yard list for the year. ----DELETED text/html MIME SECTION---- ((To unsubscribe MBB, send the command UNSUBSCRIBE MBB <YOUR MBB EMAIL ADDRESS> to <majordomo(AT)darwin.ucsc.edu>.))
