I had to go down towards Watsonville this afternoon (1/2), and with a short
break in the rain I went over to the Pajaro Dunes and Sunset SB area. At
first I only noted VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS near Shell Road, then I started to
see some BARN SWALLOWS. I worked my way over to Sunset SB Marsh and back
seeing more and more swallows, and trying to estimate the numbers. My best
estimate was 55 BARN SWALLOWS (!) and up to 100 VIOLET-GREENS, along with 2
NOR. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS zipping about over Sunset SB Marsh and the dunes.
After a while most of the swallows drifted off to the north. Perhaps some of
the same birds were among those I saw a bit later around the main entrance
road to Sunset SB off San Andreas Road.
Remarkable numbers of Barns, even exceeding the seasonally very high number
reported from this area on the CBC the day before. I don't recall how many
were reported from this area on 1/1 (but 25 Barns sticks in my mind), and I'm
not sure exactly where those were seen. Maybe someone can fill us in.

Two BARN SWALLOWS were foraging over Laguna Creek Marsh and adjacent ag.
fields today (1/3). Later I saw 1 BARN SWALLOW at Baldwin Creek Marsh and 5
BARNS over the fields near the drainage southeast of Baldwin, aka 4-Mile
Beach. A party of three TUNDRA SWANS flew over the Baldwin area going down
the coastline. Two BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were near the path to Baldwin where
it crosses the RR tracks.
