[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: College Lake & Corralitos area From: DSUDDJIAN(AT)aol.com Date: 2 Jan 2002 12:44am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I ended up covering two sections for the Moss Landing CBC today (1/1): College Lake and the Corralitos area. College Lake is as full as it can get, with many adjacent areas that feed into it also flooded over. Highlights there included a male and female REDHEAD, 6 GR. WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 4 ROSS'S GEESE, 1 SNOW GOOSE and 58 CANADA GEESE (including 4 cackling geese), 1 SWAMP SPARROW and the usual OSPREY. With all the swallows being reported in the region I was surprised that there were none at the lake, as it often has good numbers in January. The Corralitos area had several interesting birds. A PILEATED WOODPECKER was along Green Valley Road in the vicinity of address 1966. It was in an area of redwood forest. This was the first record for the Moss Landing CBC, and the first I know of along Green Valley Road or in the Greens Creek watershed, but PIWOs have recently colonized other adjacent watersheds. A male GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE was at the football field at Monte Vista Christian School off Wheelock Road. This one and two found at Struve Slough by Clay Kempf et al. provided the first records for the Moss Landing CBC. There was only 1 prior winter record for the county, from last January. A TENNESSEE WARBLER was along Casserley Creek immediately downstream of Green Valley Road where there are flowering eucalyptus. A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was in the willow riparian at 203 Merk Road upstream of Merk Pond. A male HERMIT WARBLER was at the Corralitos Women's Club. A LONG-EARED OWL was calling in the early morning (~2:30 a.m.) along Green Valley Road near mile-marker 2.65. WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were at Merk Road, Casserley Creek (2) and Gilchrist Lane off Wheelock Road. The various ponds around Corralitos were generally dull in terms of waterbirds, as tends to be the case when they are overly full. The only waterbirds of interest at the ponds were 2 HOODED MERGANSERS and Merk Pond and 2 more at one of the Monte Vista Christian School ponds. AMERICAN ROBIN was hands down my most abundant bird of the day.
