Subject: BBC Monday night, Least Bittern
From: WCDrummond(AT)aol.com
Date: 17 Jun 2008 6:06am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Dear Friends,
The Least Bittern put on a good show at Hellcat, in the North
Impoundment close to the dike. But we could not see or hear the King Rail at
the
Wardens and we could not find the Gull-billed Tern at Sandy Point.
Nevertheless
it was a fine night to be out and we amazingly did not have any rain. The
Orchard Orioles and Piping Plovers were a treat.
Lots of people are still looking for the rail and the tern. One of the
best places to report your Newburyport and vicinity sightings, before going
home to post, is Steve Grinley's Birdwatchers Supply and Gift at the Route 1
rotary, Bird Central.
Good birding, everyone.

Subject: CT Report 06/16/2008
From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 7:02am
Note: There is a problem with messages from CTBirds and this daily
report not reaching subscribers who use AT&T for email. This includes
email addresses in the @snet.net, @sbcglobal.net domains, possibly
others as well. I am trying to get it fixed but so far without
success. Thank you for your patience, and remember the archives.
Extralimital Note: A pair of Mississippi Kites are apparently
attempting to nest in Newmarket, New Hampshire. The lesson for us is
that the unexpected happens all the time, so keep your eyes (and
ears!) open.

Subject: Update: Norton Tours of Jonesport, ME
From: "David Larson" <dlarson(AT)massaudubon.org>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 12:10pm
I just got a message from Holly Davis at Norton Tours. They have decided
to carry on with trips to Machias Seal Island this summer. They will
have limited slots in July and will be back with the usual schedule in
August.
Norton Tours has 3 licensed captains who will be assisting Whitney this
summer to carry out trips and carry on the Norton family tradition. So
please factor Norton Tours and The Chief into your summer plans.

Subject: 3 Mississippi Kites! 6/17
From: "Bird Watcher's Supply & Gift" <birdwsg(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 4:43pm
Mike Beath called to report that there were THREE Mississippi Kites in
Newmarket, NH. He said that one was sitting on the nest while 2 others were in
flight. He wondered if one was a sub-adult that was "helping" out the parents.
The birds are at 228 Main Street (Rt 152) just beyond the high school.

Steven and all,
I stopped in Newmarket, NH today about noon. Both Kites are still
present. I stayed for about an hour. That whole time one stayed on its
nest, while the other occasionally flew by or perched in a nearby
tree. Their nest is right along S. Main St., about 150' or so and
across from the high school parking lot exit. It is near the top of a
maple tree, I believe, about 3' down from the top center, but fairly
well hidden. Look for the birders who will probably be there scoping
it out. The bird seems to be completely unperturbed by the traffic
along S. Main and any people around. A large moving van parked
directly under it, and movers took boxes into the abutting house, and
it didn't fidget at all. The pair seem to be here for the summer.
Hopefully we'll see some chicks in a while.
On the way back I stopped at PI. There were 2 or 3 Least Bitterns in
the North Pool, but I didn't find the Gull-billed Tern at Sandy Point.

Subject: Mississippi Kites... Nesting... 6/17
From: Byard Miller <byard(AT)virtualflybox.com>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 6:31pm
I visited Newmarket today from 10am to about 1:30. The female Kite
stayed on the nest the whole time that I was there. On a few
occasions the male made an appearance but never approached the
female. I'm hoping that the human activity in the area is not keeping
him from bringing in nourishment. She is obviously incubating eggs.
At one point she appeared to be turning them.
The nest is located about 4 or 5 feet down from the very tallest
point of a maple tree across the street from 227 South Main St (Rt
152). PLEASE be respectful of the property owners and stay on the
sidewalks. While it may be a novelty for the locals right now, they
may grow weary of all the attention in time. The female will incubate
the eggs for 30 days after which another 30 days will pass before the
young ones fledge. Let's hope that all goes well and we may see them
again in future years!
The local police ask that you park on the side of the road opposite
the sidewalk.
Photo ops were not great today as the male never came in to roost. So
many wonderful pictures were taken by others over the last few days
I'd be ashamed to even offer any up.

I would love to be able to see the Mississippi Kites up in NH, and I
was wondering if anyone was going after them tomorrow, heading north
up Route 93 past Medford, just north of Boston, and wouldnt mind some
company. I would be more then happy to chip in for gas!

Subject: CT Report 06/17/2008 BLACK-NECKED STILT
From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 10:06pm
Note: The problem continues with distribution of this report and
CTBirds messages to AT&T email addresses (in the @snet.net and
@sbcglobal.net domains). I am prodding AT&T to get it fixed, but
there is no guarantee when that might happen.
From John, Anders and Maizie Ogren:
6/17 - Old Saybrook, Plum Bank Marsh -- BLACK-NECKED STILT first seen
at 6:30 A.M. from the west bridge (west of Harvey's Beach) sitting on
sand bar north of bridge in the Back River., Relocated tonight at 6:30
P.M. in marsh about 200 feet north of 154 about half way between the 2
town beaches. Bird was feeding with other birds on top of grass (very
easily seen). Great yard bird for me!!
Parking along 154 may be a problem. Across from the Town Beach is a
pullover which affords you good access to a lot of the marsh-however,
you may not be able to stay there for any length of time. Harvey's
Beach is for non-residents but during normal hours (8-4?) you will
have to pay.
From Frank Mantlik:
6/16 - Stratford, Short Beach Park, flats of Housatonic River mouth --
3:30pm, 3 CASPIAN TERNS, resting on sand bar 10 minutes, then flew
east, calling, in the direction of Charles Is., Milford. I lost sight
of them in the distant haze. Also present: 2500 gulls, including 800
LAUGHING GULLS, 3 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, and 30+ GREAT EGRETS, 30+ SNOWY
EGRETS. A small parking fee is charged to non-residents.
6/17 - Stratford, Short Beach Park, 5pm -- No sign of Monday's Caspian
Terns, but there were 2 BLACK SKIMMERS, 6 BONAPARTE'S GULLS (4 atop
the concrete "turret"), and still a large concentration of laughing
gulls. Yesterday I forgot to report 600 DC Cormorants here.
From Joe Wojtanowski:
6/17 - Poquonock yard -- BROWN THRASHER feeding two young.
From Cindi Kobak:
6/14 - North Guilford -- four BLACK VULTURES being chased from
airspace over our yard by Red-tailed Hawk
6/16 - North Guilford, Route 77 between Elm Street and County Road --
two BLACK VULTURES with two Turkey Vultures feeding on roadkill
opossum on lawn at side of road, 2:30pm
From Ian A. Gereg:
6/12 (or so) - Litchfield, Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy --
a Black-bellied Whistling Duck appeared on the outside of one of our
duck aviaries late last week trying to get in with our captive
whistling ducks. I had heard of some odd sightings of black-bellied
in other northern states recently and wonder if this could be one of
the same birds? We've found that you can very faintly see a light
yellow tag on the right leg of the duck through a scope, making it
clearly an escapee from an aviary somewhere, although not from
Connecticut we believe as we know of no one in this state keeping them
or reporting one as lost.

Subject: more kite notes
From: Jason Forbes <jason(AT)brewsterslinnet.com>
Date: 17 Jun 2008 11:34pm
A few more comments on te Newmarket kites:
When I arrived today (Tue) at around 9AM, there were two birds flying
around (I actually had my first sighting closer to the high school,
where it was with two broad-wings). They continued to fly around for
some time, with one bird occasionally landing in the tree in back of
the house.
Once the bird came in with a stick, it circled several times and then
disappeared into the maple. I think it was a good twenty minutes
before I was able to find it in there, after which it looks like
people were on it continuously. It was hard to see in, but there were
more than a few twigs in there.
A second bird buzzed back in around 11, although the one on the nest
didn't get up while I was there. The homeowners were out doing yard
work early and seemed somewhat aware of what was going on, although I
don't think they fully understood how exceptional this is or realize
that these birds will be around for the next couple months. They had a
landscaper with a bobcat for a few minutes and garbage trucks were
going through, so I don't think there's any worry about the birds
being bothered.
A few pictures including one in flight with a stick and one on the
nest (you can just about pick out the tail):
