Hi,
I was thinking of adding one or two subscriptions to birding magazines to our

Does anyone have any favorites?
Thanks

Subject: Plum Island and NE Biolabs 6/7/08
From: Ian Davies <goshawk227(AT)earthlink.net>
Date: 7 Jun 2008 4:08pm
Will Freedberg and I birded from Ipswich to Plum Island today, seeing
what we could turn up, and hoping for some Texan ducks!
Sadly it appears that the Whistling-Ducks are no longer frequenting
the pond at the Biolabs, all I heard today were negative reports.
However, Plum Island was great today, the highlights for sure being an
American Bittern that was originally at the big pool at the Wardens,
then wandered out onto the gravel in the wide open! All of a sudden he
realized that he had no cover and had a bunch of awed birders staring
at him from 20' away.
So of course he stood straight up and 'bitterned!' After spending a
couple minutes like that, listening to the music of camera shutters,
he flew off to a shallow pan just north of the Wardens. Such an
incredible experience.
My card reader is currently MIA, but I will post pictures within a
couple days.
Also nice was a Pectoral Sandpiper at Sandy Point (Thanks Margo,
Steve, and Linda) among 11 species of shorebirds.

Massbird,
My wife and I got home from New York City at 1am today- too late for the
wonderful Black-bellied Whistling- Ducks.
Rather than torment myself and go up there right away, I went birding instead.
On the neck sanctuary posting board,
Jan Smith had made note of the following flycatchers today-Olive-sided, Great
Crested, Acadian, Alder.I had success
with all but the Acadian. He also mentioned 3+ empids. I had Least Fly and
Yellow-bellied Fly.
Additional birds of note at the neck:
Mourning Warbler
Thrush sp. song-? possible Bicknell's? (help!)-main path on left beyond lean
-over tree
Chipping Sparrow- back of main pond surprised me
Ware Pond- a vain hope for "the ducks"
? 2 Green Herons
? Willow Flycatcher-full vocal
An attempt at N.E. Biolabs around 3pm was a no, as was a stop at the Cummings
Center on the way home.

Date: 7 Jun 2008 7:40pm
Last week Dick Ferren and Chris Raithel reported a Red-billed
Tropicbird of the coast of Rhode Island. I suspected that might be the
same bird that had been seen on Matinicus Rock in Maine the last 3
years, as it headed back north once again. So, with great optimism I
signed up for the June 6th Maine Audubon trip to Matinicus,. Though
the weather was overcast, somewhat raw, and slightly rainy, the birds
were excellent. And, the RBTR did not disappoint. It flew back and
forth across the rock a number of times, providing wonderful views to
all of us who were there. Here are a few pictures from the trip:

Subject: Pale Great Horned Owl - Hamilton, MA - June 7,

From: Phil Brown <nebirds.plus(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 7 Jun 2008 10:00pm
While out this morning looking for (and not finding) the Black-bellied
Whistling Ducks I came across a very pale Great Horned Owl in Hamilton.
It was in the middle of the road initially and moved to the guard rail
as I drove past. I pulled over and took a few photos before it moved
into the woods. I'm not certain it was able to fly very far but it was
certainly able to move quickly from perch to perch. It was the palest
GHOW I've ever seen in the northeast with just a few rufous feathers
here and there.
It was banded on the right leg with what appeared to be a fish and
wildlife silver band.
I've posted several photos at the link below and would appreciate
comments on the lack of color on this owl. Thanks!

Subject: Razorbill and RTLoon
From: salvatore frontierro <sjfrontierro(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 7 Jun 2008 11:40pm
Had a couple strange sightings today: First, a Razorbill has been "hanging out"
all spring between the Paint factory and The Fort in Gloucester harbor. This
bird seems a little off as it never flies or dives... even when approached
closely by a 108-foot boat! Other than that it looks/seems healthy.
Second: I saw a red-throated loon swimming amongst a large flock of herring
gulls that had gathered around a feeding humpback whale 13 miles of of
Gloucester.
"goes to show you don't ever know...."
