From: Tom & Eloise Sylvest <tomande(AT)STARGAZER.NET>
Date: 15 Feb 2001 11:11am
Humnetters and Labirders,
This is Louisiana Winter Rudythroat Report #6 as of February 15, 2001
If you currently have a Rubythroat or know someone who does and they are
not on the list below, please inform me. Also, if you have just an
unidentified hummer in your yard please let me know and tell me when you
observed it. I want to know about all hummers and their dates first observed.
This list shows us that we have many Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in
Louisiana in the winter of 2000-2001. It also shows us where some of them
are concentrated. This, we have not known before.

Subject: Catching Ammodramus Sparrows
From: W0214835 <cbech(AT)SELU.EDU>
Date: 15 Feb 2001 1:59pm
Dear LABIRD:
Last week Olga sent a request for me, asking for volunteers to help with
surveys of Ammodramus sparrows on pine savannas.
We had an enthusiastic group catching sparrows at the Nature Conservancy=92s
Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve last Saturday. We were able to catch three
Henslow's Sparrows and three LeConte's Sparrows, along with one Lincoln's
Sparrow. Thanks again for all the effort!
For those who have not participated, I am a graduate student at Southeastern,
working on a project examining the effects of fire management on populations
of wintering Ammodramus sparrows in pine savannas. This winter I have been
censusing the populations of these sparrows on six pine savannas in St.
Tammany parish differing in time since burn and burn season. In order to get
an estimate of their density, a group of six to eight people systematically
walk across the savanna, attempting to catch all Ammodramus sparrows flushed
using a method of targeted mist netting.
This weekend will be the last of the surveys for the season. We will go to
the Lake Ramsay area to census three savannas on Nature Conservancy and
Wildlife Management Area land. I am hoping to get volunteers for two shifts
on Saturday and one on Sunday. The first shift will meet at 9 am on
Saturday, a second at 1 pm Saturday, and a third at 9 am on Sunday. We will
meet at the circle drive on Horse Branch Road, near the Nature Conservancy=92s
orange gate. You can get there by turning left onto Pruden Road from Hwy 190
and then taking a left onto Horse Branch Road.
These censuses are a great way to see these elusive sparrows in hand.
However, it can be difficult to walk through these savannas and the ground
tends to be covered in ankle deep water=97wearing rubber boots and bringing
water are essential. Please respond to the e-mail address below if you are
interested in participating.
Thanks again for the help!

Subject: Has the finch exodus begun? & Woodies looking for a nest.
From: Bill Wood <labirder(AT)SHREVE.NET>
Date: 15 Feb 2001 10:55pm
LaBirders and all,
Only Two. After months of having 50 to 100 American Goldfinches every
day, I had a grand total of two this morning. No Pine Siskins in three
days and the last Purple Finch was seen briefly Tuesday. I'm sure the warm
weather played a part in the exodus.
Down by the pond a pair of Wood Ducks investigated one of the Wood Duck
boxes. The female was on top of the box giving it the once over but I
never saw her go in it. I have seen the pair hanging around the box for
the last several days though. Ah, nesting season -- a sure sign that
spring is near.
