Subject: campus lists
From: Ron Rovansek <Rovansek.Ronaldj(AT)EPAMAIL.EPA.GOV>
Date: 24 Jan 2001 9:06am
I think that the campus lists do have some value, as pointed out by Jay. I
think the main value of such a list is to draw attention to the fact that
some birds do, at least occasionally, visit suburban habitats, and that
such habitats are therefore valuable. Too many people consider consevation
to be something that takes place in Yellowstone and Yosemite, not in their
own backyards, and any activity that might help dispell this ideea is worth
while, I think. Besides we're not talking about a lot of expense to time
devoted to campus lists, just bothering to write down what is seen.
Perhaps a more valuable type of campus list would be a campus breeding bird
list. Paul is right in saying that scattered records of passing birds are
of little scientific value, at least individually. Lists of the birds that
spend appreciable amounts of time on campus, for example to breed, are a
better indication of the real value of campus habitat. I think lists of
wintering birds might be valuable, too, but it would be tough to tell which
birds are really wintering and which are just passing through.

Jay, Ron, Paul, Labirders:
FYI, after much __encouragement__ from Jay Huner, I am working on the
Nicholls State University Campus birding list, with much assistance
from Rick Bello.
Main campus and NSU Farm listing will be forthcoming. At that time,
I will challenge our sister schools to do the same.

ron, labird,
the priniciples and sentiments that jay expressed were noble, and
all, but they didn't really address the possible scientific value of such
lists, or why campus lists would be of any more value than jiffy lube lists
[my vote to jiffy james]. aside from aesthetics, or conservation ideals, i
mean science.
i agree with many of your points, especially regarding different
type of lists. however, each type of list has fatal flaws in this case.
you're right that it doesn't take much time to write down what is
seen, as long as all you're doing is adding species to a list, but i think
we both agree that a list such as that provides no other information, and
is the equivalent of counting state license plates on the highway.
on the other hand, if someone spends much time consistently and
methodically minding the list, it might yield trends over time, but we're
talking about the equivalent of what van does in his skywatches from his
yard vs. what the average birders do for their
yard lists. van's data are valuable only because he is consistent in what
he does, because he has a set method, and because he's been at it forever.
the yard lists of most of the rest of us are only good for backyard bird
list contests--they have zero value to science.
somehow i doubt that many of you are willing to devote that much
time to shepherding a campus list, especially when you could just as easily
be birding someplace where you might actually see birds :)
a breeding bird list is clearly the better choice, but the fact
that some birds do visit suburban habitat is already evidenced by the fact
that any bird that you can find breeding on the campus at usl, for
instance, can also be found in better numbers in the surrounding city.
these are the birds that have demonstrated the ability to survive in
sub/urban environments, so no new information is being generated. i'm sure
that most labirders could type up a complete list of the breeding species
of the usl campus whether they've ever visited the campus or not. i'm sure
they could do the same for tulane, loyola, nicholls, etc. a breeding bird
list for campuses is merely a glorified restatement of the obvious.
i know how much jay loves making lists, but just because lists can
be important doesn't mean that all lists are important.
as members of the birding choir, we already know to think globally,
act locally--that's why our neighbors often want to take a bush hog to our
yards. we can expect to improve habitat in small parcels, but it's
unrealistic to think that you can use such small parcels to generate
meaningful data about bird numbers.
if there were so many birds of each species that we could each expect
to
find one of each in each one of our yards, then we could just use one yard
as the standard for the entire state, and extrapolate from there. but there
aren't that many birds, they move randomly, and so the opposite is more
prudent--use information generated across a broad geographic area and work
down from there.
on another hand, if it comes down to having a los contest for
campus lists, that might be interesting.

Paul: Why not generate a publishable list for birders similar to the lists
for Big Bend Nat. Park and other public sites. No science needed here, just
useful information for grunt birders like myself.

La-birders on and off campuses,
I guess I should add my $.02 representing Southeastern. Given the limited
time I have to do bird related activities, I'm not going to spend it on a
campus list. If grad students want to make this a project, great.
Phil Stouffer
(BTW, I just took my ornithology class on a trip this pm. I guess we could
have walked around campus, but we went down the road to Manchac and saw,
among other things, 3 Sandhill Cranes. That's a first for me in this part
of the state.)

russ,
if there's such a thing as a grunt birder, i'm one. i almost never
chase rarities, i get as much pleasure from common species as rare ones,
and my idea of a good time would be banding a hundred yellowrumps a day.
i understand what you're saying, but i think the word 'useful' is
the sticking point here.
you mention big bend. big bend is a huge wilderness area. the
number of breeding species is large, and the number of species that are
annual migrants or winter residents is also large--and fairly consistent.
on top of that, there are a few species that birders will make a special
trip for. this is true of many large, public natural areas.
the first thing i do whenever i hit such an area is ask for a bird
checklist. i know that the list is the result of years of intensive effort,
and that my birding efforts will result in basically a microcosm of the
list. aside from rarities, most of the sightings on the lists will be
'reproducible'. a large percentage of the species on the list can be
expected to be seen.
the majority of species on the usl campus list, on the other hand,
are there on the basis of one-few sightings, and can't be expected with any
kind of regularity. in essence, because the habitat is limited and poor,
using a checklist to try to predict what you'll see is like using last
week's winning lotto numbers and hoping lightning will strike twice [or
like hoping to duplicate my cam-mart boudin bird list].
what a birder is left with is a small number of birds that will use
marginal, urban habitat: typical city breeders, and ubiquitous winter
residents. and before anyone can accuse me of being a snob and dismissing
common birds, let me ask: how many people are going to go on campus to see
a cardinal or a yellow-rump when they can see them in their own yards? and
how how many visiting birders, novice or advanced, are going to want to
limit themselves to walking the usl campus hoping for spring migrants when
they can be better served walking the saint streets a few blocks away and
searching for a good pecan tree, or going to the coast and hoping for a
fallout?
birders go where the birds go, and typical campuses aren't very
attractive to birds or birders.
i'm sure that jay has the best intentions, but his crusade is
misdirected. a campus list won't help scientists, tourists, grunt birders,
birds, the soul of aldo leopold, the green party, green space, our deep
inner yearning to be free, or any of that. it'll make jay feel good, and
it'll be a burden on anyone else that gets roped into compiling such a
list.
and don't forget, when roger and charlie's book comes out,
visiting birders will have some truly valuable location guides to take them
to where the tweeties really are [just behind the cam-mart].

Louisiana Western Hummer Weekly Report #23 from 1-17-01 through 1-24-01
Humnetters and Labirders,
Look at David L'Hoste's histograms and Stacy Peterson's maps of our
Louisiana Western Winter Hummers at the LOS Website as follows:
<http://losbird.org>
Do not be offended by my not acknowledging your reports individually as
they have become too numerous
and it would require too much time. However, please report my errors to me.
Thank you for sending your first observed dates on western hummers in
Louisiana. Please continue to send your reports. And, be sure to include
those reports by birders who do not subscribe to our lists.
Report the presence of Rubythroats also. Although, there will be a separate
report for Rubythroats.
Also, please honor the request of Dr. Remsen, LSU, for info as follows:
1. Whether the bird is known to be a return (banded or marked)
2. Whether the bird is likely a return (adult with similar
markings/behavior -- this can be subjective, but do your best).
3. The departure date if you know it.
From 1-17-01 through 1-24-01 we have had additional
western winter hummers reported in Louisiana with
first observed dates.
