Subject: LA Winter Hummer Maps Updated

HI folks,
The winter hummer maps for Louisiana have been updated to reflect the latest
information on Mr. Tom's weekly report. "Only" 513 winter hummers! Good
grief! You guys are amazing over there! The communication network you have
developed is an inspiration to the rest of the world. It's refreshing to see
such a large communication net involving so many folks working toward a
common goal. Great job.
Best birding,

Do you only want to find the sparrows in LA? We have seen them in east TX in
the spring?

Dear LAbirders,
Today I saw only the second Grasshopper Sparrow that I've seen all winter in
LA, and this one was in a strange place. Several of us were walking along a
levee along the Michoud Slip (New Orleans East) when we flushed a Grasshopper
Sparrow out of very short cut grass. The sparrow flew into a tree, taking a
low perch. On the return trip, we flushed the same bird and it lit in
another tree at approximately the same height. I get the feeling the bird
does this every time somebody comes along (a lot of people walk by on their
way to fish, harvest oysters, etc.).
What really surprised me about this bird was the habitat it was living in.
The strip of close cut grass on the levee is only about 200 ft wide, breaking
into marsh on the south side and second growth woods/scrub on the north side.
Has anyone else found this bird wintering in somewhat unusual/unexpected
places?
Jennifer Coulson

Request you remove me from the LABIRD LISTSERV. I find I am not as serious a
birder as your normal subscriber. Thank you.
