Subject: Cheap field guides - Sibley and others
From: JINGOLD <JINGOLD(AT)PILOT.LSUS.EDU>
Date: 16 Jan 2001 1:54pm
E. R. Hamilton Booksellers has the following birds guides at greatly reduced
prices:
Kaufman $13.95 (paper)
Sibley $22.95 (paper)
http://www.hamiltonbook.com/
Click on Birds/Birding (found in listing on left side of page)
Click on Bird Identification Guides
The best thing about Hamilton Bookseller is that shipping and handling is
only $3.00 whether you buy 1 or 100 books. They do not take credit cards
and you can not pay over then internet. You have to printout an order form
and send in a check.
Not all books they have are on their web page. I get a newspaper from them
about once a month. The one that came today had the Curson book on Warblers
for $7.95.
Get on their mailing list for all kinds of books on all kinds of subjects.

Subject: Johnsons Bayou CBC update + Crowley CBC
Van-
Please post to labird.
Just to follow-up on an earlier post, the semi-official final
species tally for the Johnsons Bayou CBC (Dec. 17th) was 158.
The 13th Crowley CBC was held on 5 January 2001. Things started
out a bit cold and foggy, but it quickly turned into a beautiful day for a
CBC. Highlights included Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Bald Eagle,
Red-headed Woodpecker (amazingly, the first Crowley CBC record!),
Ovenbird, 2 Clay-colored Sparrows (another first), Harris' Sparrow,
Painted Bunting, and Indigo Bunting. Also noteworthy were Am. White
Pelican, Am. Avocet, Bonaparte's Gull, 100 (!) White-winged Doves,
Vermilion Flycatcher, several Dickcissels, and good numbers of Horned
Larks and Lapland Longspurs. The surprising misses were Peregrine Falcon,
Herring Gull, Wilson's Warbler, and House Finch.
Despite the late date in the count period (this was the first-ever
January Crowley CBC) and all the freezing weather that preceded the count, we
still tallied 150 species (final validation pending recounts and review of
details for rarities). This is the 7th time (and 7 of the last 9 counts) that
Crowley has reached or exceeded the (arbitrarily) magical 150 species mark (and,
for the 2 times since 1991 that we came up short, the totals were heartbreakers
of 148 and 149). Way to go, and many thanks to a great group of participants!

Subject: Bachman's Sparrow
From: w0214487 <lduda(AT)SELU.EDU>
Date: 16 Jan 2001 11:03pm
LABirders-
I am a graduate student at Southeastern Louisiana University and will be doing
some surveying of Bachman's Sparrow. I was hoping some of you may have
encountered this bird during breeding season (but winter info welcome too). I
would appreciate any details of sightings, nests, habitat type and, most
importantly, locations. You can reply to me directly at: lduda(AT)selu.edu
Thanks for your help!
