Subject: Ivory Billed Woodpecker
From: Connie Doud <ced(AT)NETUSA1.NET>
Date: 2 Feb 2002 9:34am
Did anyone tape the Ivory Billed Woodpecker piece on CBS last week? I
did manage to steal a few moments to watch it, but was not set up to tape.
It was well done and thanks for the alert concerning the airing. I have
since decided that it would make a good nucleus for a program, and would be
happy to work out some arrangement to obtain a tape copy if possible.
By the way, if anyone is traveling near Peru, there is a mounted female
specimen in the Miami County Museum opposite the courthouse downtown. It
was identified by Neil Case several years ago in an old collection and was
refurbished and is now displayed for the public, Dare we hope that a live
one will emerge from the swamps?

PS: Don't mean to start a thread, but saw 2 Turkey Vultures and 70+ male
Red-winged Blackbirds today. Never mind what the groundhog saw, the
harbingers are here.

Quite a nice variety of ducks at Stillwater marsh (Monroe County) this

Here is the duck list:
Canvasback 2
American Wigeon 12
Black Duck 6
Lesser Scaup 2
Gadwall 20
Common Goldeneye 14
Redhead 2
Ring-necked Duck ~200
Bufflehead 2

At the corner of Friendship and Gross Rd. I had 8 Fox Sparrows
gathered in a tree in response to my screech-owl tape. Also, at the
end of Friendship Rd. in the portion of the pond that can be seen from
outside the restricted area I had about 50 Mallards and
4 or 5 Northern Pintail.

Subject: Spring already?
From: Jim & Cathy <cmatthews(AT)IQUEST.NET>
Date: 2 Feb 2002 9:23pm
Fellow birders- I went out this morning to feed the birds. Two song
sparrows were singing loudly and strongly. I heard some others in the
distance, but between the barking dog (mine) and the song sparrows,
could not make out what they were. Let us hope this winter remains mild.
This winter has been fantastic for observing our neighborhood Cooper's
Hawk. I was able to count it for the feeder count in December, it has
been seen by myself and my family on several occasions throughout the
Fall and Winter. One day, this bird parked itself on some landscape
edging next to our shed and stayed there for several minutes. This was
near a favorite perch for the House Sparrows and Finches.
Enjoy those birds!
