Subject: Geographic variation Hermit Thrush C. guttatus
From: Jim Barton <redwingatfp1986(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 12 May 2008 7:49am
Hello. I'm wondering whether a form of the eastern variant of the
Hermit Thrush >C. faxoni closely approaches the western mountain (Nat
Geo)/interior west (Sibley) form >C. auduboni.
A bird seen this morning in the Consecration Dell at the Mt. Auburn
Cemetery in Cambridge, MA looked to be a western mountain form.
Description: gray Catharus thrush suggesting both Swainson's and
Gray-cheeked/Bicknell's but lacking any coloration in the face, and
presenting a very dull reddish tail, seen to contrast with the back only in
good light. Also presenting a complete white eye-ring.
The bird looked good for auduboni. A number of years ago I saw a
similar bird in the same location on almost the same date.
Nat Geo shows a complete eye-ring, Sibley an incomplete eye-ring.
Yours,
Jim Barton
