From: Ed Maioriello <edm(AT)MAIORIELLO.COM>
Date: 12 May 2008 11:49am
IBA Dedication of State Botanical Garden and Whitehall Forest
Saturday, May 17 at 1:30 pm at the Calloway Building
State Botanical Garden of Georgia
You are cordially invited to a free IBA Dedication Ceremony as the Audubon
Society recognizes the State Botanical Garden and Whitehall Forest as
official Important Bird Areas. This ceremony commemorates recognition of
exceptional bird and wildlife habitat that is vital to the health and
sustainability of bird populations worldwide. The Botanical Garden/Whitehall
is the 49th site in Georgia to achieve this recognition, and the fourteenth
site to be dedicated. Guest speaker Mary Elfner, Georgia's IBA Coordinator,
will present plaques noting this distinction. Light refreshments will follow
the ceremony, as well as an informal bird walk through the gardens. This
event is supported by the Oconee Rivers Audubon Society and the Atlanta
Audubon Society. Location is indoors at the Calloway Building Auditorium.

Subject: Connecticut Warbler, 69 species @ SCNC
From: James Neves <jamesneves(AT)GMAIL.COM>
Date: 12 May 2008 9:59am
Hi GA birders,
The storms Friday night made for a wet trail, but Sandy Creek Nature Center
and Cook's Trail were very productive on Saturday morning. With no other
people seen on Cook's Trail until about noon, the birds were relaxed but
active in the wet leaves. The highlight was two CONNECTICUT WARBLERS seen
just past the end of the boardwalks that are between the creek and the Big
Beaver Marsh. After hearing the male's song, I located a pair of birds
flitting around in a bit of a scuffle. One (presumably female) was seen for
a moment inside a thicket just long enough to see the bright eye-ring, but
the male was very cooperative by perching and singning on a head-high branch
in the sun only 25 ft away for about two minutes. Other highlights include
numerous PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, a SWAINSON'S WARBLER (heard only), and a
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH.

Subject: Dr. Geoff Hill's talk is canceled for May 12
From: Jim Gilreath <jsgilreath(AT)COX.NET>
Date: 12 May 2008 2:20pm
Please be advised for any of you who were planning to make the trip to Macon
this evening that we are canceling the presentation by Dr. Geoff Hill, of
Auburn University, on his search for Ivory-billed Woodpeckers in the Florida
panhandle.
Storm damage to Macon's infrastructure has resulted in loss of power at the
meeting site at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. There exists the good
possibility of another 8:00 pm curfew also. Logistically, because of the
number of people expected to attend, it was not feasible to try and move to
an alternate location.
Dr. Hill's talk will be rescheduled for the fall.

Subject: Clarke Co. Connecticuts not relocated yesterday
(12May08)
From: Joel McNeal <j.mcneal(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 12 May 2008 1:27pm
Hi GA birders,
I was unable to relocate the pair of Connecticut
Warblers (CONWs) reported for Saturday 11 May by James
Neves on Cook's Trail at Sandy Creek Nature Center,
Clarke Co., when I slogged through the trail from
7:30-10:30 AM yesterday ( Sunday 12 May). I scoured
the area pretty thoroughly, especially the section
from where he reported them, and never heard a CONW
chip nor song.
At the State Botanical Garden, warbler diversity has
dropped off significantly in the last few days
(species numbers back under 15), but there were 5
singing male Canada Warblers there yesterday including
3 who gave me closeup views. They looked surprised to
see me, but I think it might have just been their
eyerings (...). While these guys are still presumably
a long ways from their nesting territory, both male
and female Hoodeds (also in the genus Wilsonia) are
already foraging for hungry nestlings.

Greetings all,
I went out to Little Mulberry Park (Gwinnett Co) this morning for a few
blustery hours. Best bird of the day was a male WILSON'S WARBLER (perhaps a
product of these W-NW winds wrapping around the low pressure system to our
north?). Also had two additional personal firsts for the park- a pair of
Acadian Flycatchers and a single Eastern Wood-pewee.

Hi, folks, there were 6 White-rumped Sandpipers at the American Proteins
plant (northern Forsyth Co.) this evening. They flew in while I was there
but remained skittish, often taking to the wing, for about an hour after
their arrival. They were still there when I left, though. Also present:
Lesser Yellowlegs - 3
Spotted Sandpiper - 4
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 4 (also 1 Semipal/Western that I could have been
talked into either way)
Least Sandpiper - 50
Dunlin - 1 (also here last evening, 5/11)
Pectoral Sandpiper - 4
Savannah Sparrow - 1

Subject: Mourning Warbler at Clyde Sheperd Preserve
From: Nathan Farnau <natwan(AT)HOTMAIL.COM>
Date: 12 May 2008 8:42pm
This male MOURNING WARBLER was found at Clyde Sheperd Nature Preserve early this
afternoon
(5/12/08) where the "Beaver Trail" intersects the trail that parallels the
creek. Some of you may be
familiar with the wooden ladder that sits on the slope between the trail and the
water. He was just to
the right of this spot.
The bird gave quick but clear looks, offered 6-8 chip notes, then disappeared
without singing.
I tried to relocate the bird for about and hour, but was unsuccessful.

KING RAIL still hanging out in the swamp/marsh. SAVANNAH SPARROW flushed in
the sparrow field, then perched in full view for a fairly late record of
this species in the Piedmont. A pair of GREEN HERONS was seen flying and
calling over the swamp/marsh as well as the YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, who
put on his regular heading-to-roost flight performance. The SPOTTED
SANDPIPERS on the river are certainly something to keep an eye on as spring
wears on and turns into summer. There are breeding records of the species
in the Atlanta area (see ACOGB), and the birds seen today and on other
occasions seem to be pairs; they forage together, fly from rock to rock
together, etc. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was "singing" his odd repertoire on
the far edge of the sparrow field, and a pretty male CANADA WARBLER was
another good FOTS for the afternoon. I am saddened to report no sign of the
Red-shouldered Hawk family. The nest appears to have fallen into disrepair
and is sagging, with no fresh twigs or green leaves as would appear almost
every day when the nest was active. I don't know what happened to those
beautiful healthy chicks, but as you could see in Chris Willis' wonderful
photos they were still downy and not even close to leaving the nest. On a
happier note, the GREAT BLUE HERON young are getting bigger every day, and
are sporting big spikey mohawks, testing out their legs and flapping those
big wings, so cute in an awkward sort of way :)
