[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Blackpoll Warblers From: "nuthatch3(AT)aol.com" <nuthatch3@AOL.COM> Date: 27 Apr 2008 7:40am Since it's raining this morning, I have been watching the bird trffic in the woods behind my house. I've had a few goodies. In 5 minutes I have found 1 male Rose-breasted Grosbeak, 1 Palm Warbler, 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, 1 male Indigo Bunting, and 2 Blackpoll Warblers. The 2 Blackpolls were working the same tree. These 2 are not my FOTS Blackpolls. I had 1 on Friday 4/25. I get them coming through each spring. Nice to see them back. Have a great day. Rice birds From: Carole Ludwig <carolelud(AT)AOL.COM> Date: 27 Apr 2008 1:15pm While riding on my neighbor's organic farm this morning, I saw a small (12-15) flock of Bobolinks, most in beautiful plumage.? Bobolinks show up on this farm reliably every year, and might be viewed from Old Farmington Rd. in Oconee Co.? DeLorme p. 28, grid A3.? DeLorme road names do not agree with road signage.? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Pendleton king Park Augusta Ga From: charles Scarborough <charlesscarborough(AT)GMAIL.COM> Date: 27 Apr 2008 2:12pm A quick walk through Pendleton King Park 1pm-2pm: Warblers: Black-throated Blue 1 Black and White Warbler 3 Swainson's Warbler (at least 2 singing) Lousiana Waterthrush 1 other: Wood Thrush 2 Nearly everyday for the last week i have been for a quick walk through the park and have seen what apears to be the same Worm-Eating, Black-throated Blue .....today the worm-eating did not show. This is the first time I have noted Swainson's warblers in this park and they were much more willing to come out in the open than I have seen in the past.. The mosquitos are pretty thick so bring some OFF. It still amazes me that within 300 ft of blaring rap music, the smell of grilling hamburgers there are some great birds. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: AWBB- Augusta version From: Lois <croakie(AT)COMCAST.NET> Date: 27 Apr 2008 4:52pm The Augusta Birdmasters did the All Women's Birding Bust yesterday, a = week before the official event because some of us have other activities = next weekend. We survived a morning downpour that led to a beautifully = clear afternoon and had a good time. Warbler migration seems to be = avoiding Augusta this year but we still managed to get some good birds = and a total of 96 species (5 unshared) in and around Phinizy Swamp NP, = Merry Brother's brickyard ponds and Lover's Lane/August Levee. =20 We had only 8 species of warblers; Louisiana Waterthrush, Common = Yellowthroat, Northern Parula, Yellow-breasted Chat, Yellow-rumped, = Yellow-throated, Pine and Prothontary Warblers. There were Bobolinks = everywhere we went though. We had Savannah, Swamp and Field Sparrows as = well as a very wet Grasshopper Sparrow just after the storm. There were = a lot of Orchard Orioles around, many of them doing displays for the = ladies. Hawks weren't easily found but the Ospreys appear to be setting = up house on the Oxbow nest. A Black-crowned Night-heron and White Ibis = were also surprises here. We got several more duck species than we expected. The usual Mallard = and Wood Ducks were found early but then one pair of Blue-winged Teal = were found at Phinizy and over at Merry we had one Ruddy Duck, one = female Bufflehead and 9 Lesser Scaup, all unexpected. Also at Merry = were two Caspian Terns. The Cliff Swallows have also arrived and are = fixing their nests up in preparation for nesting. All of the buntings were in including one flock of upward of 20 Indigo = Buntings in a small section of grain field. It appeared that about = every 5th stalk had a bunting on it. Over the course of the day, mostly = at Phinizy but a few elsewhere, we had 18 or so Painted Buntings, all = but 2 of them were adult males. Blue Grosbeaks were out in numbers too. The Barn Owls were not found in either of the normal places. Their = normal nesting place is falling down, we're not sure if or where they've = moved. It was a fun although long day and we look forward to next year. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Coastal trip 4/26 & 4/27 From: Steve Parrish <geauxtigers(AT)ALLTEL.NET> Date: 27 Apr 2008 7:22pm My wife Megan and I were at Harris Neck, Jekyll Island, and Altamaha NWR = this weekend. Harris Neck was a lot of fun. We've never seen so may Painted Buntings. = Warblers were not bad; lots of N. Parula and Yellow-Throated Warblers, = decent numbers of Black and White Warblers, Yellow-Rumped Warblers, = Prairie Warblers, Pine Warblers, a Hooded Warbler, and an Ovenbird. = Woody Pond is FULL of Wood Storks and the usual Herons and Egrets. Gray = Catbirds are everywhere. At the last pond before leaving there were = Glossy Ibis, a few Blue-Winged Teal, and a couple of Lesser Yellowlegs. After the afternoon rain we checked the mudflats behind the Jekyll = Island Visitor Center. Lots of Short-Billed Dowitchers, decent numbers = of Wilson's Plover, a few Black Bellied Plover. Nothing unusual at = South Beach that evening and the next morning a woman's dog broke up the = birds at South Beach just before we got there (apparently with her = encouragement). There are lots of N. Parula, Yellow-Throated Warblers, = and White-Eyed Vireos calling. We got an Orange-Crowned Warbler and = Ovenbird and also found the Gray Kingbirds that hang out at the = convention center but Jekyll was somewhat disappointing. On the way back we stopped at Altamaha at the viewing platform at the SW = edge of the refuge and saw 23 Black-bellied Whisting Ducks, 2 = Black-necked Stilts, 6 Mottled Ducks, 2 Blue-winged Teal and a White = Throated Sparrow. In the marsh behind the refuge buildings there were = dozens of Bobolinks and there were several in the marsh on the east side = of the highway as well. =20 Steve Parrish Milledgeville Baldwin County =20 ********** To search GABO-L archives or manage your subscription, go to http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/gabo-l.html To contact a listowner, send message to GABO-L-request(AT)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU To view GABO-L information/guidelines, go to http://www.gos.org/gabo.html

If anyone locates the bird please post! We then headed to Kennesaw Mountain (KMT) and had a great time birding there! After KMT we headed out to the Bartow County Loop (BCL) where we again had a great time birding. Highlights included: Brandon Farm Road, coming from Hwy 113, just before the first hilltop and on the right (there is a house on the right just over or on top of this hill), look on the right about halfway out to the 3 huge power towers: Bobolink 200+ Blue-winged Warbler - must have recently left KMT! I also got a chance to do some mountain birding (my favorite!) a little earlier than normal. I’m excited that lots of birds are in, singing, and all dressed up in their finest. I’ll only mention details for a few species, otherwise the highlights below ranged from several birds (Prairie Warbler) to plentiful (Black-throated Green Warbler) in appropriate habitat, of course. I tried to do Brasstown, Sun late morning, but the summit was totally socked in by clouds and mist with zero visibility so I limped back down and headed south ;) BMT = Benton Mackaye Trail (most of the morning Sat) VSP = Vogel State Park (Sat-Sun) CWMA = Chestatee WMA (quick stop Sun) DF = Dawson Forest WMA (quick stop Sun) RUFFED GROUSE 1, BMT; not seen, but I got to hear (and feel) a male performing the drumming display – it was like a car passing by with heavy bass playing!) Red-shouldered Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1, BMT; 1, DF Eastern Screech Owl 1, VSP (called one in for the kids, really cool for both parties) Whip-poor-will 5, BMT (just before dawn; saw one flush from the ground, too) Chimney Swift Ruby-throated Hummingbird 3, DF (saw one male performing display dives/buzzing) Hairy Woodpecker Acadian Flycatcher 1, CWMA Eastern Phoebe Great Crested Flycatcher White-eyed Vireo, CWMA & DF Yellow-throated Vireo Blue-headed Vireo (mountains only) Red-eyed Vireo COMMON RAVEN 2, BMT; heard one croaking in a high voice, looked up and saw two flying over! What was really cool was that the birds were flying over pretty high so I got to see their bills open/shut for a split second before the croaking sounds reached my ears) Northern Rough-winged Swallow Barn Swallow (annual colony setting up at pavilion on Lake Tralyta, VSP) White-breasted Nuthatch Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, CWMA & DF Eastern Bluebird Wood Thrush Blue-winged Warbler 2, DF Golden-winged Warbler, BMT Northern Parula Chestnut-sided Warbler (higher elevations) Black-throated Blue Warbler, Sosebee Cover & VSP Yellow-rumped Warbler 3, BMT only (?) We had some success, banding 13 birds, mapping a few territories, seeing some interesting behaviors, and finding an additional 13 or so birds we could not band. In doing all that driving, we saw lots of birds, mostly in Laurens County. Most notably, there were HUNDREDS of Bobolinks. The first flock, of about 200, were at the south end of the airport. But we found hundreds more at New Buckeye Road, West Laurens School Road, and a few other places.
