If you are in the Cartersville/Bartow county on Saturday, the The Margaret & Luke Pettit Environmental Preserve (near HWY 113 & HWY 61) is open for guests. The Pettit Preserve is rarely open to the general public. The preserve has 60 acres, a lake, streams and hiking trails. The hours are 10AM - 2PM. The directions are available on the Pettit Preserve web site http://www.pettitpreserve.com/index.html If you going to be in Cartersvlle birding, stop by the Pettit Preserve. I don't know what birds you can expect to find, but it may be fun! Note: At noon, the new hiking trail and swinging bridge will be dedicated. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Nashville Warbler continues; State Botanical Garden, Athens From: Joel McNeal <j.mcneal(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 25 Apr 2008 2:12pm Hi GA birders. The NASHVILLE WARBLER heard by James Neves and myself at the State Botanical Garden on Wednesday was heard again this morning by Karla O'Grady, Bill O'Grady, and I. It is best heard from across the river on the orange trail a couple hundred yards upriver of its junction with the purple trail. It never came into view, but it did sound like it approached relatively close to the river's edge at one point. A Yellow-breasted Chat was skulking on the east side of the lower powerline cut and, later, singing from the west side. Good birding, Joel McNeal Winterville (Athens-Clarke Co.), GA ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: 4-letter code converter From: Steve Holzman <steve_holzman(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 25 Apr 2008 4:44pm Hello, Many birders like to record their sightings using 4 letter banding codes. Reporting these (without the common names) goes against the guidelines of GABO-L. I've written a spreadsheet that allows you to type in your codes in one column and the spreadsheet will put the appropriate common name in the other column. You can then type in the number of birds seen in a third column and then cute and paste the list into a GABO-L message (as PLAIN TEXT). Don't bother with this if you are not that computer savvy, or have no problem just typing out the common names. But if you are avoiding posting your lists to the listserv because you don't like typing out the full common name, use this handy spreadsheet and it'll only take you a few seconds to convert the codes to common names. http://www.coastalgeorgiabirding.org/banding_codes_converter.xls if you don't have Microsoft Word, the spreadsheet will also work in the free office suite (Open Office) available below. http://download.openoffice.org/ Feel free to email me if you need help. Good luck, Steve Holzman North High Shoals, GA Oconee County, USA ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Behavior & recent birds in Ware Co. & Okefenokee Swamp From: Sheila Willis <swillis(AT)WAYXCABLE.COM> Date: 25 Apr 2008 5:35pm Hey folks, Hope you are fine. Here is an update for South Georgia for the Waycross area as well as for the Okefenokee Swamp. Waycross, Ware Co. Note, my Red Mulberries are ripening quite well this week at home, so there is lots of bird action in them. What a show!! The NORTHERN CARDINALs seem to drop a good bit though. BARRED OWL: I went looking in my backyard today (4/25) around 3:45 p.m. to see if I could still see the one that has been nesting in the adjacent Water Oak. I couldn't see any tail feathers sticking out of the cavity as I usually do, and so I then looked around to see if any young were perching nearby. I glanced across the lot & WOW!! A beautiful adult was sitting in broad daylight in a Sycamore tree blinking its eyes. How pretty was that, with its brown patterns and the fresh green leaves & white trunk of the Sycamore!! I wish I had a camera!! RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER: On 4/24 A pretty male came to my pine tree that they feed on regularly & while attempting to find bugs in the bark, it had an "itch attack". It made all sorts of contortions to relieve itself. At one point it just stretched its right wing out & held it in the sun for a while. CAROLINA WREN: Today (4/25) while talking to my father who also lives in Waycross, I could hear one calling loudly & nonstop right over the phone!! What vocal cords!! HERMIT THRUSH: On 4/24 & 25 I saw one at my bird bath. I usually have one that stays for the winter, but I think it has already left & this one is a migrant. The tail color didn't seem to be as bright. GRAY CATBIRD: they've been doing some interesting things lately in my backyard. On 4/17 & 18 one kept repeatedly flying & clinging to the screen over my bathroom window at different times during the day. I could hear the noise of it coming to the window. It isn't flying into the window, just coming to it & grabbing hold of the screen. There is a big Red Mulberry tree next to it with ripening fruit but it has lots of branches to sit on. The window has no reflection that I can tell. I didn't notice any bugs on the window, as I often do for my other locations, but perhaps the bird ate it just before I got there. Today (4/25) I saw another Gray Catbird get upset at the birdbath. I always have my hose coming through some trees & then draping down near the bath. My father had left the hose touching on the edge when he finished filling it up for me. A catbird came & stood along the rim. It would occasionally spread its tail feathers. Then it would hop on the hose at different times, go back to the rim, then back onto the hose, etc. Then stand nearby on the rim & keep cocking its head towards the hose. I wonder if it somehow thought this was a snake. I went out & moved the hose away so the bird could get a bath/drink peacefully. It later returned to take a bath. Another one showed up too & they had a series of short fights. Laura S. Walker State Park, s. of Waycross, Ware Co. RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD: Nancy Boyne said she noted their return to the park on 3/15. And on 4/21 Joe & Judy Wallace had one hover in their face & then fight with another. Okefenokee Swamp: COMMON LOON: On 4/23 Sallie Gentry, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge Ranger, and others saw and heard one swimming in Seagrove Lake at the Eastern Entrance to the refuge near Folkston, Charlton Co. from around 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This is a rare migrant for the swamp and was watched from the Owl's Roost Tower that is in Chesser Prairie. KING RAIL: On 4/23 Sallie Gentry & Helen Petre saw a bird in the "second opening going out the boardwalk" in Chesser Prairie at the Eastern Entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge near Folkston, Charlton Co. It was sitting & calling from the top of a small shrub/tree ~10' high, then it flew down into the shrubs of the swamp prairie (flooded grasslands). This was seen after the above sighting. This species is a year-round, breeding resident of the Okefenokee Swamp. Take care. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: red cross-bills in Woodstock, GA From: Sue Aughey <seaughey(AT)HOTMAIL.COM> Date: 25 Apr 2008 5:49pm I have had 2 sightings red cross-bills coming to my bird bath. 4/13 there was a mixed flock of 7 birds: 2 males, 3 females and two juveniles. They came around 2:00 pm. and stayed for 20 minutes in the tres. Today, 4/25 I had a male and female back in my water bath. sue ********** To search GABO-L archives or manage your subscription, go to http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/gabo-l.html To contact a listowner, send message to GABO-L-request(AT)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU To view GABO-L information/guidelines, go to http://www.gos.org/gabo.html

For some interesting information on cowbird behavior check out this link: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/03/070305202649.htm It is possible that the cowbirds were hanging around to check up on the status of their eggs. cheers, Clark Jones Athens, GA Athens-Clarke county USA ********** To search GABO-L archives or manage your subscription, go to http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/gabo-l.html To contact a listowner, send message to GABO-L-request(AT)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU To view GABO-L information/guidelines, go to http://www.gos.org/gabo.html

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Piedmont NWR & E.L. Huie 4/25/08 From: Mark McShane <EAGLEEYED(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET> Date: 25 Apr 2008 11:40pm Hi All, After joining Bob Sargent's awesome bird watching tour of Robins Air Force Base in Warner-Robins this morning I decided to bird Piedmont NWR and the E.L. Huie ponds after lunch and on the way home! I first birded Allison Lake, and then the Little Rock Wildlife Drive. The highlight (along with hearing at least 3 Northern Bobwhite and seeing maybe two of them in the big open area across from the pond) was meeting Bird Song - Identification Made Easy (1996 - ISBN 1-896219-11-X) author Ernie Jardine (and friend) down from Canada there! I was able to get an autographed copy of the book from Ernie! If you are traveling east on Round Oak Juliette Road towards the Little Rock Wildlife Drive there is a gravel road going north just before the Wildlife Drive. About 1.9 miles north on this gravel road from Round Oak Juliette Road there is a Red-cockaded Woodpecker colony on the right. Here is where I had 4+ Bachman's Sparrow singing (at about 5 in the afternoon) and sighted two of them in the scope singing perched at close quarters, as well as sighting three Red-cockaded Woodpecker at this spot! I had to leave the sparrows perched and singing because I couldn't stay to watch them anymore! There is a creek crossing the road to ford to get to the 1.9 mile mark. It was flat and level enough, and shallow enough so that I had no problems crossing it with my Camry (except that I did get stuck there on the way back for a while watching an Acadian Flycather around the stream). I am sure that the ford conditions and water level sometimes change for the worse. At the E.L. Huie ponds highlights were 20+ Least Sandpiper and an Orchard Oriole! Good Birding All!
