The RBA is a service of the Georgia Ornithological Society. Jeff Sewell is the voice of the RBA. The YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDs first reported on the RBA on April 11th are still present as of April 17th at the farm of Ruth Weaver, 338 Miller Rd., in Montezuma in Macon Co. This might be the largest flock of Yellow-headed Blackbirds ever seen in Georgia. Three adult males, two adult females, and one possible immature bird have been seen at this location. HORNED LARKs have also been seen here. This location can be found at DeLorme 42-F2. Directions can be found in the GABO archives, as well as in a link in the last GA RBA transcription. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0804&L=gabo-l&F=&S=&P=31138 A SNOWY PLOVER was relocated on the south end of Jekyll Island on April 17th, in the company of several Piping Plovers. This bird has been seen in this location since January. This is only the 2nd record of this species in Georgia. Also seen were 3 WILSON'S PLOVERs, an AMERICAN AVOCET, and an AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, among others. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0804&L=gabo-l&F=&S=&P=32984 A LAUGHING GULL was seen in a Kroger parking lot in Macon in Bibb Co. on April 19th. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0804&L=gabo-l&F=&S=&P=32566 A NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen among other birds at the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve in Dekalb Co. on April 19th. http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0804&L=gabo-l&F=&S=&P=32658 From the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Marietta, in Cobb Co., one our state's hot-spots for neotropical songbirds, comes a report of 16 species of warblers, including CERULEAN WARBLERs, seen on April 19th. [Transcriber's opinion only: This report is from the daily e-mail "KMT Report", which is not normally posted to GABO. It should be. There is no reason not to. Band codes? Learn them. Post a link on the GOS site to the codes, as an educational resource, and include the link in the text of the daily report. I've never understood why this great resource is limited to a mailing list. Same with Ken Blankenship's new Cochran Shoals Report. I'm sorry if I'm out of line here, but it's positively silly. In the spring, I read the reports from Kennesaw and suffer extreme Warbler Envy! However, in Forsyth Park in downtown Savannah yesterday, a group of Ogeechee Audubon members found the following: Summer Tanager - several Orchard Oriole Baltimore Oriole Eastern Wood Pewee Great Crested Flycatcher Chimney Swifts and 10 species of Warblers Yellow-rumped Parula Black & White Common Yellowthroat American Redstart Ovenbird Black-throated Blue Prairie Yellow Cape May as well as the usual residents. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: State Botanical Garden, Athens; 23Apr08 From: Joel McNeal <j.mcneal(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 23 Apr 2008 12:45pm James Neves and I had a lot of birds (75 spp. total) at the State Botanical Garden in Athens this morning, although the majority didn't provide very satisfying views. Notable exceptions were 2 male Scarlet Tanagers feeding right next to each other and occasionally squabbling in plain view, many singing Indigo Buntings, and a Barred Owl on an open branch above the river. Among 18 warbler spp. (19 if you count YB Chat, which I don't), the highlights were a NASHVILLE WARBLER singing across the river from the junction of the purple and orange trails and good looks at 2 of the 4 Worm-eating Warblers. First of the season birds for the botanical garden included an Eastern Wood-Pewee, Gray Catbird, the aforementioned Nashville Warbler, Yellow Warblers, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Palm Warbler, and a Yellow-breasted Chat (Palms are oddly difficult to get in spring at the botanical garden, even though they're easy other places in the Athens area). Some highlights from our ebird report are below (for a more detailed rundown of locations, see my post at the Oconee Rivers Audubon message board; http://www.quicktopic.com/29/H/6JbdZFsuhUc6 ). I've had a Wood Thrush singing at home, but they are disturbingly scarce or absent from the botanical garden as they were most of last summer. Barred Owl 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 7 Red-headed Woodpecker 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Acadian Flycatcher 1 Great Crested Flycatcher 3 Eastern Kingbird 2 Yellow-throated Vireo 4 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 (going, going...) [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Kennesaw Mountain 4/23/08 From: Steve Parrish <geauxtigers(AT)ALLTEL.NET> Date: 23 Apr 2008 3:00pm Good day at Kennesaw; about 1/3 way up the road there was a mixed group = of warblers that was pretty incredible from my limited perspective. Without needing to move there were: Palm Warbler (lots) Blue Winged Warbler (1 to 3) Northern Parula (1 or 2) Prairie Warbler (1 or 2) Black and White Warbler (at least 2) Worm Eating Warbler=20 Black Throated Blue Warbler (1 or 2) Blackburnian Warbler Yellow Rumped Warbler (lots) Other warblers were: Blue Throated Green (lots calling, 2 seen) Yellow (one just after the Cape May trail) Hooded (one seen, several calling) Pine (several calling) Blackpoll (a few calling but not seen) Giff Beaton had a brief glimpse of a Cerulean The top half of the mountain was not very good, most birds are being = seen fairly low. Other birds of interest: Coopers Hawk Sharp Shinned Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Scarlet Tanager (M&F) Summer Tanager Indigo Bunting (lots) Rose Breasted Grossbeak Great Crested Flycatcher White Breasted Nuthatch White Eyed Vireo Red Eyed Vireo Blue Gray Gnatcatcher Anyway, it beat the heck out of 1 year and 1 day ago when the only = warblers that I could find were Yellow Rumped and Blackburnian, the = trees were bare from the frost, and the sky was full of smoke from the wildfires. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Sapelo Sandhill Cranes From: Bob Churi <rchuri(AT)DARIENTEL.NET> Date: 23 Apr 2008 3:13pm In addition to the usual shorebirds on Sapelo Island this morning, we had 30 Whimbrel in the marsh and 2 Sandhill Cranes flying over the south end of Sapelo. The Cranes were heading northeast over the water amd I presume they were from the St Catherines flock. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: swallowtail kites From: William Griffin <wilgriffin(AT)WORLDNET.ATT.NET> Date: 23 Apr 2008 3:56pm Today on the Ogeeche River, I saw two swallow tail kites. They were = upstream from the Highway 119 bridge, between Effingham and Bulloch = counties. The first was about 5 1/2 km upstream from the bridge = (N32-20', W 81-28') and the second was around 5 km past the first = (N32-21', W81-30'). Only one Mississippi kite, one kingfisher, numerous pileated wp's = and turkey vultures. No fish, though, not one. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Purple Martin repeat offender captured and released From: philliphardy <philliphardy(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET> Date: 23 Apr 2008 4:45pm Good afternoon birders. Actually this is pretty cool. On Monday of this week I did my scheduled Purple Martin nest check. While checking in one of the apartments I noticed a martin sitting on eggs. I gently reached my hand inside the cavity and caught the bird. Upon removing her from her nest I noticed that she was banded. After recording the colors of the bands and the numbers, I did some checking in my notes. I have captured this same exact female PUMA every year since 2003 while performing my nest checks and recording data. So now PUMA number 8031 over 80776 has been captured and released again to continue her incubation of 6 eggs. Now I understand why you bird banders get so excited whenever you catch a banded bird. It's hard to describe the feeling unless you have experienced it. She has been captured and released every year for 5 years now by yours truly. Purple Martins rule. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Yellow warbler today at Clyde Shepherd From: stancha(AT)AOL.COM Date: 23 Apr 2008 5:18pm I did some brief early morning birding at Clyde Shepherd in Decatur, and today's highlight was the male yellow warbler, near the creek along the back trail on the opposite side of the lake from the observation platform. I heard many hooded warblers and a Blackburnian, and the yellow-breasted chat is still hanging around and singing his bizarre repertoire. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: Purple Martin repeat offender captured and released From: Charlie <cmmbirds(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 23 Apr 2008 5:42pm Phillip, That is great news! Thanks for sharing with us. Now, not only do you know how old she is, you know that she has strong nest site fidelity - same place every year. That tells you that the location is good. Contrary to what may seem logical, not every place with lots of birds is good habitat. Some places have lots of birds, but they are different birds every season, or even over the course of the season. The only way to tell the difference is to have them marked. Do you have any idea who banded the bird? Have you reported these to the BBL? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Cochran Shoals Report 4/23/08 From: Ken Blankenship <kenhblankenship(AT)COMCAST.NET> Date: 23 Apr 2008 9:35pm 17:00-19:30 Partly Cloudy; 78F Observers: K Blankenship Very low swallow activity again, it has been a week since a nice flock of 4-5 spp. has been seen on the river; normally an avg. of 7-8 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS are seen but over the past few days only 3-4 and they are visiting tree cavities often so their mates may be on the nest at this time; yet another GREAT BLUE HERON nest tree was found today, given away by the constant calls of the nesting birds for a total of 17 nests along the river, all on the east side, many with young; there are at least 11 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER territories that I know of, but only two nests have been located; I was very glad to find a (FOTS) NASHVILLE WARBLER today, which was singing as well. One of the only remaining large areas of dense brushy cover with privet still intact is in the center of the long north- south slough that lies between the main west and east jogging trails, and I found this bird along with a singing NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH today by walking through the now-open woods to bird along the edge of this area. The problem is, it is so dense and impenetrable that you really can't bird in there and mosquitoes seem to like it, too ;) Ken DCCO Double-crested Cormorant 2 GBHE Great Blue Heron 22 GRHE Green Heron 1 TUVU Turkey Vulture 1 OSPR Osprey 1 RSHA Red-shouldered Hawk 2 SPSA Spotted Sandpiper 1 CHSW Chimney Swift 6 RTHU Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 BEKI Belted Kingfisher 1 RHWO Red-headed Woodpecker 3 HAWO Hairy Woodpecker 1 EAPH Eastern Phoebe 1 GCFL Great Crested Flycatcher 1 EAKI Eastern Kingbird 2 WEVI White-eyed Vireo 6 YTVI Yellow-throated Vireo 2 REVI Red-eyed Vireo 4 FICR Fish Crow 1 NRWS Northern Rough-winged Swallow 20 BARS Barn Swallow 2 HOWR House Wren 1 BGGN Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 22 EABL Eastern Bluebird 2 NAWA Nashville Warbler (fots) 1 YRWA Yellow-rumped Warbler 26 PIWA Pine Warbler 3 PAWA Palm Warbler 1 WEWA Worm-eating Warbler (fots) 1 NOWA Northern Waterthrush 1 COYE Common Yellowthroat 4 SWSP Swamp Sparrow 4 WTSP White-throated Sparrow 17 INBU Indigo Bunting 2 RWBL Red-winged Blackbird 7 AMGO American Goldfinch 16 ********** To search GABO-L archives or manage your subscription, go to http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/gabo-l.html To contact a listowner, send message to GABO-L-request(AT)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU To view GABO-L information/guidelines, go to http://www.gos.org/gabo.html
