Subject: Townsend's Solitaire in TN
From: Vicki DeLoach <VLDELOACH(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 22 Apr 2008 12:00pm
A friend in Memphis, Allen Sparks, photographed a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on
Sunday. He's a terrific photographer and got a superb photograph as you can
see below:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/asparks306/2430039690/
He and his wife were able to relocate the bird last night after work. If
anyone is interested in making that drive, information is posted on TN-bird or
I can put you in touch with him for more details. As I have just learned
from Giff this bird has never been seen in GA. And is only the 2nd confirmed
record for TN.
Yard update: I hear a WOOD THRUSH singing, and our first-of-the-year
CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW and male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK arrived this weekend. Had
2
INDIGO BUNTINGS yesterday feeding with the goldfinches.

Pine (heard only) 3-5
Ovenbird (heard only) 3-5
Worm-eating 5-8=20
Hooded 1-2
CERULEAN 1-2 (singing) =20
(Good overall numbers, though not a lot of different warbler sp.)
=20
Other:
RC Kinglets many
GC Flycatcher few
RB Grosbeak (1) FOTS
Indigos several
Pileated WP (1) [nice look/call/ drummed repeatedly close range]
GB Heron (2) one flew from tree on ridge top!=20
Vireos - RE and BH many
Summer Tanager several (some pairs)
Scarlet Tanager several
-----------------------------------------------------------
=20
Also in past week (some in different habitat at bottom of same ridge):
Blackburnian Warbler (many sightings)
Prairie Warbler (many sightings - better numbers than last year)
Nashville (1)=20
Common Yellow-throat
Black-throated blue (1-heard only)
Blue-winged warbler (1or2, heard only) -- As in the past, these seem to =
be drawn to the sound emitted by the power poles. The sound, though =
somewhat continuous at times, closely resembles the last part of the BW =
song. I watched these birds sing adjacent to these poles on multiple =
occasions last year. It could be just a coincidence due to the suitable =
powerline habitat, but the sound resemblance and specific perch =
locations are uncanny. Has anyone else noted such behavior? =20

Subject: birding problems and Coffee Co Sightings
From: Todd Womack <TWomack(AT)COFFEE.K12.GA.US>
Date: 22 Apr 2008 1:23pm
First, I would like to thank everyone for the multitude of responses to my
original posting about what I perceive as a lack of birding programs aimed
at high school age and adult birders with little free time and the complete
lack of bird related curriculum in Georgia public secondary schools.
I have never had as many responses since I first started posting on GABO. I
don’t think a posted Condor sighting would have elicited as many comments.
While 90% were very positive, a small handful mistakenly thought that I was
attacking certain people or organizations. Nothing could be further from
the truth. I am proud to be allowed to be a member of GOS and all the other
bird societies/organizations that I belong to and I have been happy to
volunteer to help with the Colonial Coast birding festival the last two
years (and I plan to this year as well). Perhaps my rambling statement
never fully came to my point clearly- One, make sure to have as many
birding events, meetings, etc. on weekends as possible and second, and more
importantly, you must make sure the state of Georgia includes bird related
studies as part of the mandated curriculum. I am speaking from experience
here- I taught archaeology at my high school until the state decided it was
no longer important enough to provide a state approved curriculum. I
continued for another two years with a curriculum that I designed, but was
stopped again when No Child Left Behind came into being because it does not
think it was important either and cut funding. All classes deemed not
worthy (except basic core classes) are being dropped by school systems
around the nation. We can come up with all the bird events, worksheets, and
websites in the world, but if teachers and schools are actually prevented
from using any of them… what have we actually accomplished?
And now for something completely different, Coffee County bird sightings
for the week of April 14-20:
Osprey, seen 4/16 and 17 near the Old Shop Pond in north Douglas.
Small flocks (12 to 25) of Cedar Waxwings have been seen in several
locations in Douglas/Coffee.
As reported earlier by A. Bittaker, the Stapleton Pond Rookery in again
active! On 4/16, 350+ Cattle egrets, 50+ Little Blue Herons, 12 Snowy
egrets, 30 Anhinga, smaller numbers of Great egrets and White ibis also.
Redwings, American crows, Kingfishers, and Moorhens present as well.

Subject: help on shrikes in Laurens?
From: Charlie <cmmbirds(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 22 Apr 2008 3:35pm
Hi folks,
This summer I will be leading a research project in Laurens County.
It will be an extension and increase of my Loggerhead Shrike (LOSH)
banding project in Lamar/Monroe Counties, and is something which has
been requested by DNR to augment the valuable information that Nathan
Klaus gathered and is compiling from all of your sightings. Laurens
County was chosen because it appears to be the center of perhaps the
healthiest breeding population of LOSH in the state. My assistant
and sub-permittee, Jonathan Gray will be out there a lot, also.
Our first work will be this Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27.
Neither of us knows much about Laurens County. While I'll be getting
a lot of info from Nathan, Jonathan and I could use your help in
focusing our efforts. If you are familiar with the area, I'd greatly
appreciate the following:
1)areas that seem to regularly have LOSH
2)areas that have them in the summer, vs winter, vs year-round
3)any mating behavior you see (copulating, carrying nesting material
or food or fecal sacs, 2 birds in very close proximity in appropriate
season, etc).
4) any other information that may help us - good, cheap places for
food, cheap but decent motels and campgrounds, landowners who might
be amenable to our coming on their property to band birds
5) we'll be doing some color banding. If you're interested in
helping watch for color-banded birds, please contact me.
We'll be there this weekend, so if you see us, feel free to stop and
say hi. We are happy to give a demo to any person who asks. If we
have a bird we'll do show and tell (unless the bird is stressed) and
if we don't we'll be happy to show you the trap and introduce you to
our assistant who is named Bait. He's the small white one with a
long tail and beady eyes. And if we are about to set the trap,
you're welcome to watch with us, at binocular distance.
Oh, and if you were to drop off a cold Mountain Dew in the AM or hot
coffee in the PM, we wouldn't turn it down. :-)
PLEASE send this information to me off list, unless you think it
pertinent to the whole listserv. My email address is:
cmmbirds(AT)yahoo.com
Thanks!
Charlie

Subject: Chuck in Lamar
From: Charlie <cmmbirds(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 22 Apr 2008 3:39pm
Hi folks,
Last night, as I was cleaning off my fire gear at 11:30pm (on a
school night - yuck!) I heard my first Chuck-Will's-Widow singing. I
was on my deck and the bird was behind my garage - to the right of
the driveway for those of you who have come to the house looking for
them.
The most reliable Whip-Poor-Will is across the street from the house.
If you go down my driveway, take a right and go about 50 meters.
It's usually just about 10 - 15 meters into the trees.

From: philliphardy <philliphardy(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET>
Date: 22 Apr 2008 4:54pm
Good afternoon birders.
My wife, Myra, found a Mourning dove nesting in an ornamental palm tree we
have near the pool. As we come and go from the back door the bird has
gotten accustomed to us. She even tolerates us within two or three feet.
Now we discovered a second Mourning dove nesting in the same tree but on a
different limb about eight feet away. Apparently Mourning doves don't have
the turf and territory issues that some other birds have. Hum.... maybe
there is a life lesson for all of mankind here??? Anyway, it's great to be
host to two nesting MODO right outside our back door.

Hi,
This morning I went out just for a quick half hour or so and got 8 species
of warblers in that time period! The highlights were a gorgeous singing male
Blue-winged Warbler, and a singing Kentucky (not very common for the yard).
Other warblers include - several Ovenbird, Prairie, Yellow-rumped, and
Orange-crowned Warblers, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Common Yellowthroat.
A quick side note, yesterday (4-21-08) I had my FOS Yellow-breasted Chat.
Good Birding!

From: Darlene Moore <djmoore67(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET>
Date: 22 Apr 2008 8:37pm
GABOers,
Becky Valentine and I made the trip to east Dublin to the Riverbend WMA.
We had never birded the area before and our best bird of the day was a
soaring Swallow-tailed Kite who circled overhead, then continued on down
the Oconee River.
We also has some nice assortment of warblers including: Yellow-throated,
Parula, Black-throated Green, Yellow-rumped, Palm, Am. Redstart, Pine,
Prothonatory (he was photogenic too). Both Scarlet and Summer Tangers were
seen. Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak gave good looks. We heard and saw
an Acadian Flycatcher, Great-creasted Flycatcher, Pewee, and Phoebe. Both
White and Red eyed Vireos were see.
Sadly we dipped on a few species No Swainson's, Lousiana, Hooded, or
Kentucky to speak of..
Did however pick up a tick, and a large number of mosquito bites, bring
bug spray if you go...
But still a great day of birding.

I want to thank everyone who sent me their suggestions on what this bird could
be. Most said Towhee. This bird is in the big tree. It is loud and sounds most
like the Spotted Towhee except it is a little slower. I'm hoping that I will be

Subject: Yard birds

Yesterday I heard my first Great Crested Flycatcher. Today while checkin=
g my Wood Duck box on the dock I saw some type Sandpiper flying away - t=
oo far to ID it. The Wood Ducks are due to hatch this weekend - didn't h=
ear any pecking or peeping in the eggs today so it will be several more =
days. This afternoon I saw a HOUSE SPARROW in the yard (I also call them=
"McDonald Birds" or "Burger King Birds") which is very unusual and I ha=
ve only had one on one other occasion. Checked my notes and the other ti=
me was 04-24-05 - only two days difference in three years!!!!! =
Also at dusk I heard a faint call and wasn't sure whether it was a Whip-=
poor-will or Chuck- will's- widow calling.

Had a good view of a Great Crested Flycatcher in our backyard this afternoon. A
lone palm warbler paid a short visit 2 days ago.
