Had a nice walk w/ 4 others this morning (great to meet you all) at Clyde

until about 10:15 am, covering most of the major areas of the preserve.
Highlights of the morning included a NASHVILLE WARBLER in the back of the
preserve near the Saturn dealership (lots of bird activity back there
around 9:00 am as the sun broke through), 10+ Indigo Buntings, a molting

Subject: Dawson Forest AAS Field Trip
From: Georgann Schmalz <georgannschmalz(AT)ALLTEL.NET>
Date: 19 Apr 2008 3:25pm
The Atlanta Audubon field trip this morning, 19 April, at Dawson Forest WMA,
Atlanta Tract (Dawson County) had 8 participants and 75 species of birds
including 17 species of warblers. After a wet night, everyone was in full
voice, so we heard more than we saw. But then, ninety percent of birding is
audio, the other fifty percent is visual. The only sad sighting was the
duck blind pond that had at least two to three dozen trees broken and fallen
due to tremendous winds that swept briefly through the eastern part of
Dawson County (the butt of the Scottie dog) on Friday, 11 April. At the
rookery, one Great Blue Heron's nest is gone. Fortunately, the other nine
nests are still there, but I can't imagine how those nests stayed put while
everything else around them was crashing to the ground.
Highlights of today:
Canada Goose nesting
Mallard (with a nest tube built for it)
Wood Duck
Blue-winged Teal
Solitary Sandpiper
Eastern Wood-Pewee
Eastern Kingbird
Great Crested Flycatcher
Four vireos-White-eyed, Yellow-throated, Blue-headed and Red-eyed
Wood Thrush
Blue-winged Warbler
Northern Parula
Magnolia Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Pine Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Palm Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler
Ovenbird
Louisiana Waterthrush
Kentucky Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Hooded Warbler
Yellow-breasted Chat
Summer Tanager
Next field trip at Dawson Forest is tomorrow at 8 AM when we will reverse
our route, starting at the end of the dirt road at the Etowah River and
finishing at the wetlands at the entrance gate. Meet at the entrance gate
and wetlands at 8 AM sharp so we can carpool down the road. If you arrive
later, drive on down the road and catch up to us.
Three field trips next week are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, starting at
Dawson Forest, but we may carpool up to Sosebee Cove depending upon the
weather each day.
Later,
