[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Ogeechee Audubon Forsyth Park (Savannah) Warbler Walk Rpt From: "Sandra (Sandy) Beasley" <SavBirder(AT)AOL.COM> Date: 16 Apr 2008 7:50am Hi All, The second OAS Warbler Walk in forsyth Park (FP) was held Tuesday morning (April 15). Again the weather conditions were less than ideal--chilly (45 d F), overcast, and breezy at times. Four hardy birders ( ; ) or is that an oxymoron?) lingered around the fountain until about 7:45 am, hoping for warming, sunnier weather and other birders . Last week our only warbler was a yellow-rumped and better prospects weren't looking too good for this week. However as time passed our warbler count increased. Results: Warblers: Black and White, Hooded, Parula, Worm-eating, and the ubiquitous Yellow-rumped. PRETTY GOOD In addition to the usual FP birds, we had a RED-TAILED HAWK, SUMMER TANAGER, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER. We're still waiting for an Ovenbird and more warblers. Future Warbler Walks in Forsyth Park are Tuesday, April 22 and April 29 at start at 7:15 at the fountain. Good Birding, Sandy Beasley Savannah, Chatham County, GA savbirder(AT)aol.com **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms and advice on AOL Money & Finance. From: Peter Gordon <peter(AT)ELACHEE.ORG> Date: 16 Apr 2008 11:39am Hi Folks, We had some nice birds near the Nature Center and some of the adjoining trails including our FOTY male Scarlet Tanager, 4 Wood Thrushes, 2 Ovenbirds, 2 Palm Warblers, a Blue-Grey Gnatcatcher, 6 Red-eyed Vireo, and a Blue-headed Vireo. Yesterday near Walnut Creek we had a pair of LA Watherthrushed and a FOTY Hooded Warbler. Next week, Elachee will again offer its week of Birding hikes to good spots in the Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve and other areas throughout Hall County. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: State Botanical Garden, Athens; 16Apr08 From: Joel McNeal <j.mcneal(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 16 Apr 2008 12:22pm Hi GA birders, James Neves and I birded just the lower powerline and white trail along the Middle Oconee River at the State Botanical Garden early this morning. Although the looks were mostly crummy, and the birds only sang sporadically in the cold, we managed 15 warblers and 60 total species. Two Cerulean Warblers persisted near the privet eradication area (both were across the river when we left). Highlights were: Broad-winged Hawk 1 (botgarden First Of The Season) Acadian Flycatcher 1 (FOTS) Blue-winged Warbler 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 3 Northern Parula 6 Yellow-rumped Warbler 8 Yellow-throated Warbler 1 Pine Warbler 4 Prairie Warbler 2 Cerulean Warbler 2 Black-and-white Warbler 3 American Redstart 1 Worm-eating Warbler 2 Louisiana Waterthrush 1 Kentucky Warbler Common Yellowthroat 3 Hooded Warbler 5 Indigo Bunting 1 (botgarden FOTS) Good birding, Joel McNeal Winterville (Athens-Clarke Co.), GA ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Panola Spring Bird Hikes From: Phil Delestrez <Phil.Delestrez(AT)DNR.STATE.GA.US> Date: 16 Apr 2008 12:33pm This past week, we have had Prairie Warblers, Northern Parulas, and Wood Thrushes all in the area we will be walking tomorrow. Also, first of the spring Orchard Oriole, Indigo Buntings, and Chimney Swifts near Alexander Lake area. We just burned the grasslands in the Power of Flight wetland area, very patchy burn which should create a diversity of micro-habitats. Some areas burned completely, some areas did not burn at all, some areas burned but left lots of standing cover. If you want to join me on the walk, meet me at the parking area at Alexander Lake Road and Flatbridge Rd, near Alexander Lake at 7:00 am. All birding levels welcome, in fact I could use some help from more experienced birders. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Summer Tanager & other FOTS in Ware Co. plus updates From: Sheila Willis <swillis(AT)WAYXCABLE.COM> Date: 16 Apr 2008 8:46pm Hey folks, Hope you are fine. Here is a quick note on FOTS & others for Waycross, Ware Co. for 4/16: BARRED OWL: called again during the afternoon from its oak tree nest FISH CROW: 2 flew together into my yard with a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD after one GRAY CATBIRD: FOTS, at least 3, possibly 4, showed up together today in my backyard in the afternoon & were dashing around in the shrubbery. One decided to go to the top of a branch & do the "meow". The Red Mulberry fruit around my feeders has not long turned red & when it gets ripe, this bird species will attack it with gusto. BROWN THRASHER: a pair was active around the yard SUMMER TANAGER: a female FOTS showed up at the bath about the same time as the Gray Catbirds. Then it went to some trees & eventually got a bug. WHITE-THROATED SPARROW: 1 with the bright white head-streaks & 1 with the tan head-streaks were side-by-side for a nice contrast Sincerely, Sheila Willis Native American-Naturalist Talks & Tours Waycross, Ware Co., GA ********** To search GABO-L archives or manage your subscription, go to http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/gabo-l.html To contact a listowner, send message to GABO-L-request(AT)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU To view GABO-L information/guidelines, go to http://www.gos.org/gabo.html
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Lincoln's Sparrow @ Oxbow Meadows - 4/16 From: Walt Chambers <Walter.Frank.Chambers(AT)STUDENT.MERCER.EDU> Date: 16 Apr 2008 9:01pm Swung by the borrow pit pond at Oxbow Meadows for a few minutes this afternoon. Not much in the way of waterbirds, but did pish up a Lincoln's Sparrow at the corner of the pond just as you get on the berm when it perched up in one of the small Chinese Tallow trees. This is the 3rd spring record for this species at OM.
