[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Barred Owl at Mercer Wetlands From: Patty McLean <plm108(AT)COMCAST.NET> Date: 10 Apr 2008 7:00am On my way home yesterday (around 7:15p), I decided to cruise around the Mercer Wetlands. As I was crossing the bridge over North Peachtree Creek, a large shape caught my eye. I knew immediately it must be one of the Barred Owls that we've been hearing but haven't yet seen. I pulled over to watch him and noticed he was struggling with something at his feet. In a moment, he took to the air, flying over the bridge with a rather defeated glob of fur. Hopefully a rat. It was grand to watch him fly so gracefully through the woods and into another tree where he could enjoy his catch. After this great moment, I drove past one of the ponds and saw several wood ducks and a lone Muskrat. Evenings along these ponds are full of delight as the ducks start coming in for the night and the red shouldered hawks hunt for their last meal. Might not see as many birds but the sights and sounds as evening approaches is intriguing. A nice way to end a rather busy/hectic day. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Great Blue Herons From: Marla Mitchell <marla.mitchell(AT)GMAIL.COM> Date: 10 Apr 2008 7:17am Hi all, I just happened to be on the back porch with my hubby enjoying nature, when I looked up and saw 2 beautiful big Blue Herons fly over ahead. Usually when I see Blue Heron flying, I only see one. First Blue Heron I have ever seen over the house! Spring and romance is in the air! Isn't it great? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Lamar Co From: Tracey <traceson(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 10 Apr 2008 7:13pm My husband, Charlie, and I noticed a few goodies in Lamar County this week with Allan (will be 4 in a couple of months). On Tuesday we heard our first WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH while out walking on Eady Creek Rd. Today, driving home with Allan, we "stopped to look at birds at swamp" (love it when he asks for that) on Bottoms Rd. We saw a pair of BLUE WINGED TEAL and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Montezuma and Marshallville 4/10/08 From: Mark McShane <eagleeyed(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET> Date: 10 Apr 2008 7:52pm Hi All, I had most of today off and was planning to bird Kennesaw Mountain and Cochran Shoals today, that is until I saw Jeff Sewell's post late last night concerning the casual Yellow-headed Blackbird in Montezuma (I had never seen YHBL before)! I headed down this morning and arrived about 8:15 (had two Loggerhead Shrike, and a Northern Harrier, on the close approach)! I pulled in the driveway of the farm, per Jeff's email, and parked. Ruth, carrying a very cute toddler, came out to greet me and explained that the bird was usually seen feeding on a hay stack in a cattle enclosure right there next to the driveway. She went inside and I turned and looked at the haystack which the cattle were feeding from... There was a male Yellow-headed Blackbird feeding on top of the stack, along with some Brown-headed Cowbirds, and then another came round the stack, and then another looking like an immature male with some white- tipped wing coverts! Wow, that's not 1, that's 3!!! That was easy, and quick, and really, really good! I kept watching these life birds for quite some time, eventually 5 appeared on the haystack at once, 3 adult males, and two adult females. After a while they flew off and flocked to a nearby large and tall tree (with some cowbirds) at the house northwest, across the street, from Ruth's, and I could still scope them there from Ruth's. When I first saw the 3 it looked as if there was an immature male. When I had eyes on the 5 all at once it was clearly 3 adult males and two adult females (brown bodies, no white wing coverts), so a 6th bird may be the immature male! Thanks to Ruth for sharing the birds! The mailbox is marked 338. If you approach Miller Road from the south it is paved and marked. If you approach it from the north, the way I came, it is a very small unmarked field road that eventually turns into the full Miller Road (thanks Garmin). Garmin GPS coordinates: N 32 18.692, W 83 57.163 What to do for an encore? On the way back go to the Marshallville Super Sod Farm that's what and check out spring shorebird migration! At the sod farm, coming south on Felton Road along the east side of the farm, I had 8 Upland Sandpiper in the field just before the 2nd large sprinkler on the right! Several of the birds were resting down in the sprinkler wheel ruts, or some low spots, and only their long thin necks and small dovelike heads were visible above the grass looking like sandpiper periscopes! I also found a Horned Lark (with very pronounced horns) on station. Wow, what a great day! I stopped by Bond Swamp on the way to Athens but it was too late in the day and I didn't hear or see Swainson's Warbler from the road. http://www.wingsoverga.com/BibbCoBirdingSites.html#BondSwamp Good Birding All! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Oh My Gosh, I actually saw one today !!! From: James Brooks <jrbamc(AT)JUNO.COM> Date: 10 Apr 2008 9:07pm From the 20th floor, glancing out before lunch, gazing straight north along Peachtree St, when a Rock Pigeon came zooming in and made a hard left toward the side of my building one floor below, as another large bird also zoomed past at the same moment. Before I could even blink and was wondering what I had just seen, when the big Peregrine Falcon came sailing back across my view again, right to left this time, wings out-stretched, barely one floor below me. What a great but quick view, the bird moving left and right as it glided around the corner and out of view towards the taller concrete cliffs surrounding Peachtree and 14th St. I don't know where they are nesting, but I will certainly keep my eyes open for another glimpse of these magnificent fliers. Imagine being able to do that... perch high above the city, race through the concrete canyons, power dive on hapless pigeons... what a life that would be to fly... like a falcon. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Merlin, Orange-crowned Warblers, etc.; State Botanical Garden in Athens From: Joel McNeal <j.mcneal(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 10 Apr 2008 9:21pm Karla O'Grady, Bill O'Grady, Mitchell Jarrett and I birded the botanical garden this morning. Our most unusual bird was a MERLIN who flew through going breakneck speed at treetop level while scattering gnatcatchers and other small birds ahead of it. The bird was moving north on a mission. We had 2 Orange-crowned Warblers, 3 Yellow-throated Warblers, and 7 other warbler spp. on the day (no Swainson's Warblers there yet). We also had a Sapsucker still hanging around, and we estimated over 80 Gnatcatchers (there seemed to be multiples in every tree out there). After I left for work, the rest of the group went on to get the first Red-eyed Vireos of the season there, along with Red-headed Woodpeckers, who have been absent since January, at the beaverpond/wetland. I had a Great-crested Flycatcher when I returned late this evening (my first of the season there was in Tuesday). We totaled 59 species for the day, which is a great count for there this time of year. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Yellow-crowned night heron, Prairie Warbler From: Patty McLean <plm108(AT)COMCAST.NET> Date: 10 Apr 2008 11:18pm Mercer Wetlands pleases again. You might think I'm a bit stuck on this place and of course, you'd be right. I can't seem to help myself - perhaps because it's so close to where I live and work, offering me a quick fix when I have the urge to see, hear and smell the delights of nature - and this evening was no exception. Hoping to find at least one new bird for our Mercer list, I swung by after work and got 3 new ones: YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON (completely in the open), PRAIRIE WARBLER, AND GREEN HERON - which brings the total spp we've spotted (and identified) since Oct to 86. Other highlights today were Common Yellowthroat, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, White-eyed Vireo, nesting Red- shouldered Hawk, Blue-winged Teal, Wood Duck, and Chimney Swift. And, oh yes, the Red-headed Woodpeckers (males, of course) were busy fighting it out over the prime real estate overlooking the back pond. Lots of tap-tap- tapping and squawking as other males challenged. Battles ensued - and as I left them, one male victoriously clung to his tattered tree. I wondered if the females were as impressed as I was. The Muskrat continued his solemn search for an evening meal - and silently swam past a large armored shape which I soon realized was an Alligator Snapping Turtle. Babies beware.
