Subject: Savannah NWR 4/3 late post
From: "nuthatch3(AT)aol.com" <nuthatch3@AOL.COM>
Date: 5 Apr 2008 7:39am
I went back to the Savannah NWR (Laurel Drive) Thursday afternoon, 4/3. I
saw many of the same birds that I saw on 4/1. The number of Tree Swallows
on 4/3 had drastically increased. I would have to say that there were
10,000 plus Tree Swallows there. Also seen were 2 Black-crowned Night-
Herons. Both were seen about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile in on Laurel Drive.
Both were young birds. The first was a 1st spring bird and the other was a
2nd spring bird. I also got 1 female American Kestrel, 1 Northern Harrier,
and 1 first year Red-tailed Hawk. For a dreary cloudy afternoon with no
bugs, it was a nice late afternoon bird diversion!

week after the male.

I saw our first of the season Ruby-throated Hummingbird this morning

Still have juncos, and the crows are building new nest in the top of a pine
tree above the backyard. Saw one male purple finch last weekend but not
seen him since.

A rainy Cochran Shoals yesterday (4/4) again produced the Vesper sparrow
that Ken Blankenship reported on 4/3. It was foraging, near the old
restroom building, with a surprising little group of birds (for this site)
including 5 Savannah sparrows and 1 Field sparrow.
It's fun to see these birds making migration appearances in the metro
area. They weren't easily flushed and offered great looks.

Subject: Purple Finch invasion (Forsyth County)
From: Grant McCreary <jedigrant(AT)excite.com>
Date: 5 Apr 2008 1:10pm
Today I've counted at least 8 males and 10 female-types. Yesterday I counted 5
and 10, respectively. I'm sure there are more, since they're flying all about,
along with at least a dozen goldfinches.
Most of the female-types are classic females, but a few have just a bit of
purple fringing on the head and mantle. I had assumed that those could be 1st
year males, but I don't think that's the case after reading this in the species'
Birds of NA account:
Female identical to Basic I plumage, except in rare instances when older birds
acquire a pink tinge on the head, neck, rump, and occasionally part of breast.
I've also been surprised by the variation in rump color. Most of the apparent
females have the standard light-brown, but some have a hint of red/purple (as
mentioned above). But one has a distinctly yellowish rump, along with a little
more yellow on the breast. In my limited research thus far I haven't seen any
mention of a yellowish color. It could be diet-related, or a pigmentation
condition like albinism (I know there's a name for excessive yellowish
pigmentation, but I don't know it offhand and probably wouldn't be able to
pronounce or spell it if I did!).
Anyways, they've been around in numbers for a few weeks. I had seen mostly
single birds throughout the winter up until mid-March.

Our peanut feeder has finally been abandoned as of mid week by the
Baltimore Oriole, nice to think he is good and fat with Georgia peanuts
to power his migration home to wherever. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
that was using the feeder has also moved on, though others are in the
area.
Ironically we had our FOTS Purple Finches this week, showing up at our
black oil sunflower feeder, at least 2 females and one male.
Also had a FOTS yellow-billed cuckoo singing in our hedgerow today
between rain showers.

Had 4 FOTS in or near the yard today. New arrivals included 1-2 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKs, WOOD THRUSH, RED-EYED VIREO, and HOODED WARBLER.
I still have 2 PINE SISKINS at the feeder (the latest I've ever had them), but
I haven't had Purple Finch or Red-breasted Nuthatch in about a week.
I have a NORTHERN PARULA that has been singing in the yard for 2 weeks now. I
have never had one breed here before - we'll see what happens. Also nice to
have a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK nest that I can watch from the front porch...I have
always had them nearby, but actually nesting in the yard would be a first.
Cool stuff...

Subject: C. Loon extravaganza; Bear Creek Reservoir, Jackson
Co. 5Apr08
From: Joel McNeal <j.mcneal(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 5 Apr 2008 11:02pm
Hi Georgia birders,
I had dreams of the weather system causing a great
fallout of waterbirds at Bear Creek Reservoir (
http://www.wingsoverga.com/JacksonCoBirdingSites.html#BearCreekReservoir
), so when the weather finally broke this evening I
headed out there with Bill and Karla O'Grady for the
last couple hours of daylight. Although there weren't
any ridiculous rarities there, the COMMON LOON show
was spectacular. From the fishing area we had a high
count in the 60s, but when we moved to the pulloff
further down GA 330, we had numbers in the 90s (I
counted them on multiple passes with a high of 95, but
with so many actively diving the true count was very
likely over 100). All but a couple birds were in
spectacular breeding plumage, and we were treated to
some wonderful yodeling a few times. We also had a
HORNED GREBE in near breeding plumage (also seen
Thursday). The diving duck numbers were surprisingly
low given the loon count, but the drake GREATER SCAUP
who has been seen off and on all spring was still
around. Swallow numbers and diversity were very good.
As the light was fading and drizzle began to pick up,
we had a flyover GREAT EGRET, which would have been a
fantastic final bird of the day had I not done one
more scan of the reservoir and inadvertently caught an
adult BALD EAGLE flying across to the treeline
parallel to rt. 330 where it disappeared into a
possible nest tree. I can't say the scenery around
Bear Creek R. is terribly pristine, but seeing and
hearing yodeling loons, a Bald Eagle flying over, and
also a couple Coyotes calling definitely gave it a
wild feel this evening. Highlights from our ebird
report are below (by the way, ebird flagged our count
of 105 Brown-headed Cowbirds as an 'excellent count;'
I would beg to differ...).
Canada Goose 220
Blue-winged Teal 4 (2 drakes, 2 hens)
Ring-necked Duck 1 (drake)
Greater Scaup 1 (drake)
Lesser Scaup 15
Bufflehead 9 (mostly hens)

Great Egret 1
Bald Eagle 1
American Coot 70
Killdeer 2
