Subject: Calliope and FOTS Ruby throated hummingbird,
Gwinnett County
From: Rick & Sandy <ricknsandy(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET>
Date: 4 Apr 2008 9:14am
We had our FOTS RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, a male, this morning. Saw him out
on an oak limb, not in a hurry to get to the nectar feeder, which he
eventually did.
Our CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, is still here. She still frequents a nectar
feeder.
We have seen both of the birds in the back yard, and so far they have gone
to two different feeders.

Subject: Pinkish Sandwich Terns
From: Diana Churchill <dichurch(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET>
Date: 4 Apr 2008 12:59am
I went to Tybee North Beach on Thursday afternoon to check out the
pinkish Sandwich Terns reported by Stacy Zarpentine. There were
several that were colored. At least one of the group was banded. I
don’t know if this is diet related or due to a dye used by
researchers. Any thoughts?
I've posted a photo on my web site http://web.mac.com/dichurchbirds
(go to Diana's blog)
There were still half a dozen Purple Sandpipers around, Dunlin
beginning to get black bellies, 20 American Oystercatchers (none
banded), many Black Skimmers, 4 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and
one Wilson’s Plover. This is the first time I have seen Wilson’s on
Tybee proper. I usually see them on Little Tybee or occasionally
from the boat on a mud flat.
Cheers,
Diana

Subject: Vesper Sparrow 4/3; Soras 4/2 @ Cochran Shoals
From: Ken Blankenship <kenhblankenship(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 4 Apr 2008 12:36am
Yesterday afternoon 4/3/08 a nice surprise was a VESPER SPARROW (fots)
feeding on the gravel and in the low grass near the currently closed
restroom building at the sparrow field, joined by a SAVANNAH SPARROW.
Also, a GREEN HERON (fots) was acting strange, perched high atop the snags
in the swamp/marsh instead of skulking around as usual.
Another wave of swallows has moved in on the river. Yesterday five spp.
were observed - 2 CLIFF SWALLOWS, 1 TREE SWALLOW, 20-30 BARN SWALLOWS, 2
PURPLE MARTINS and well over 100 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS. Also
mixing in with the clouds of swallows were 30-40 CHIMNEY SWIFTS. This is a
great opportunity to hone your swallow ID skills; just spend some time
watching their aerial show. The main concentration tends to center over
the rocky shoals between the swamp/marsh trail and the south parking lot
port-o-jons.
Wednesday 4/2, two SORAS were found by Nathan Farnau in the swamp/marsh.
This species and VESPER SPARROW can both be tricky to come across in the
metro area.
As always, please report any birding observations from Cochran Shoals to
me via email :)

Subject: Mercer Wetlands - AAS walk this Sunday 4/6
From: Patty McLean <plm108(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 4 Apr 2008 12:24pm
Looking for an interesting metro area to bird this weekend? How about
joining us at Mercer Wetlands? If you've never birded here, now's your
chance to explore this diverse area with a few folks who've been birding
there for a while. Joy Carter and I will lead the walk this Sunday (4/6)
beginning at 8:30a. Join us in the parking lot in front of the Columbia
Bldg at 2900 Woodcock Blvd and we'll explore various habitats in the area
until 11:30a or so. Our focus will be on warblers, vireos, hawks,
woodpeckers, waterfowl (especially hooded mergansers and wood ducks), and
hopefully we'll find a few surprises along the way. You'll have the option
to tromp into some muddy areas so bring mud boots if you want to do this.
Otherwise, there are plenty of birds to see from dry ground.
For those who have joined us previously, please note that this is a
different meeting spot.
Directions to 2900 Woodcock Blvd:
From I-85 heading south, take the Chamblee Tucker exit and turn LEFT. Go
0.2 miles and turn RIGHT on Flowers Road. Take the first RIGHT on
Woodcock. The parking lot will be on your right.
From I-85 north, take the Shallowford exit and continue north for approx
1.5 miles to Woodcock Blvd and turn RIGHT. Go to the end of the street and
the parking lot will be on your left. [For those of you who have joined us

Subject: Re: pink sandwich terns
From: Nathan Farnau <natwan(AT)HOTMAIL.COM>
Date: 4 Apr 2008 5:30pm
My experience with pink dye on birds relates to mark/recapture studies of wading
birds. Specifically,
while working on a cattle egret project in the Delaware River (with Manomet
Center for Conservation
Science in 2000), I assisted in the dying of egrets so that breeding individuals
could be relocated
within a nesting colony (Pea Patch Island). We banded these birds in
conjunction with the application
of the dye. This dye was an intense fuscia color and likely remained until the
affected feathers were
molted in the fall.
If any breeding success or toxicology work is being done on sandwich terns on
the southeast coast,
this bird's coloration could be associated with that effort. I'm out of the
research loop these days, so
I'm not sure what projects are on-going.

Date: 4 Apr 2008 5:55pm
Richard White of Rome located 5 SURF SCOTERS on the private lake at S.I.=
Storey Lumber Co. this afternoon around 4:PM.
This is private property and is POSTED but if you will check with the ni=
ghtwatchman at the office and let him know you are looking and the ducks=
is will be ok. =
The office is located just past the lake on the left side of the road an=
d there is a very large CEDAR TREE at the office. This also probably wou=
ld be a good place to park and walk across to the lake so as not to spoo=
k the ducks. =
Directions: Go I-75 North to HWY 140 exit (Adairsville Ga.). Continued =
on til you run into U.S. 27. Turn RIGHT on HWY 27 (toward Summerville, G=
a) - continued on approx. 2 1/2 miles til you see a large brown sign RO=
CKY MOUNTAIN RECREATION AREA. Turn left onto SIKE STORY ROAD and continu=
e on STRAIGHT on this road (do not follow brown sign here). Storey Lumbe=
r will be a short distance down Sike Story and lake is on right side - o=
ffice and nightwatchman a little further down on left at large Cedar Tre=
e.
This lake has been a stopping place for several rare waterfowl in the pa=
st and we appreciate Richard's eagle eyes in spotting them for us all.

From: Phil Delestrez <Phil.Delestrez(AT)DNR.STATE.GA.US>
Date: 4 Apr 2008 6:23pm
Usually I post something about Panola Mountain birds, but was at High Falls
today, helping their Resource Manager prepare for an upcoming program, and heard
my first of the year Northern Parula's, all along the nature trail near the
river. Also, saw a bunch of swallows under the bridge near the park entrance,
saw Rough-Winged Swallows, but there may have been some different ones mixed in
there. Also, Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers, Eastern Bluebirds, and White-Eyed Vireos.
But, the sight of the day was not a bird, but a butterfly. A giant Yucca
Skipper, right near the river, about a mile back on the trail. The rocky slopes
of the river create a pretty arid habitat, with lots of yucca, cactus, and even
False Aloe in some places. Pretty cool place. If you are there, and want to
see the Yucca Skipper, contact Paulette Thompson, Resource Manager at Hight
Falls State Park.

Subject: Birding Today at the Jackson's in Dublin
From: slaytons(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET
Date: 4 Apr 2008 9:20pm
It was a little dreary on the way to Dublin this morning. But the sun came out
and it turned into a great day. We saw the GB Mango at least 3 times. Once at
the Rhodes Feeder an twice at the Jackson's Feeders. Marshall had just gone into
the house when the GB Mango made a pass at the Dogwood Tree but kept going. The
tree dogwood tree ws weighted down by Chipping Sparrows. They were everywhere.
The Mango came back and lit in the Dogwood then came down to the small feeder
for about 5 seconds. My wife, Louise and this guy from West Virginia got good
looks from the Jackson's deck. She would call me when it showed up but I was a
little too slow. If I was at the Rhodes the GB Mango would show up at the
Jackson's feeder. But i was able to get one short look as it passed over the
Jackson's Dogwood tree. The wind was really blowing hard in the afternoon making
it very hard to get any pictures. Other Birds of interest were: male
Ruby-throated Hummingbird at Jackson's middle Feeder, Fe!
male an
d Immature Baltimore Orioles. There was at least one Male Yellow-rumped in
almost full spring colors. Good Birding and hope you have a blessed evening.

Subject: pinkish Sandwich Terns
From: Sheila Willis <swillis(AT)WAYXCABLE.COM>
Date: 4 Apr 2008 10:13pm
Hey,
Hope you are fine.
In reference to Stacy Zarpentine's & Diana Churchill's recent posts about
finding some pinkish Sandwich Terns on Tybee Island, I did a GOOGLE search &
found the following:
(see losbird.org) LOS News No. 189. June 1999 Part 2 said in discussing the
identification of mid-sized Sterna terns: "For example, none of the basic
field guides mention that some Sandwich Terns, like Roseate Terns, can
develop a fairly bright pink "blush" during the breeding season. Some Common
Terns can also have a pinkish or mauve cast to their underparts." and "At a
great distance, beware of Sandwich Tern which may superficially resemble
Roseate in general shape and coloration, but greater size and yellow-tipped
bill are obvious on closer inspection."
Birdchat Sat, 5 Mar 2005 had Debbie Viess referencing the Whooping Crane
Festival at Port Aransas, TX that had Gene Blacklock as leader, & finding "a
sandwich tern showing a wash of pink across his breast, a color that occurs
in some of these terns due to their shellfish diet".
Pinkmoose Birding said for the Bolivar Peninsular in TX at Rollover Pass:
"one Sandwich Tern had a very pink breast".
I couldn't find any reference to any current studies, but there could be
some nonetheless.
Incidentally, a few years ago myself & other locals saw a peach-colored
CATTLE EGRET in the countryside west of Folkston, Charlton Co. several years
together. I was told that in coastal central FL the chemicals that are
sprayed on the orange groves often turn the egrets peach or green.
Thanks for the pictures, Diana!!
Take care.
Sincerely,
Sheila Willis
