Subject: Cooper's Hawk nest in Tucker
From: JJ Jones <jjj2718(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 1 Apr 2008 9:08am
Burnt Fork Creek runs behind the office and I had heard and seen the male
Cooper's hawk calling in the early morning hours, just at first light
(before the time change)as I walked in to the office. Then last week,
while looking out of a 4th floor window, I spotted what looked like the
nest high in a pine tree. So of course I grabbed my binoculars at lunch.
The female (I'm guessing) has been there pretty consistently since then.
Very cool.

Subject: ORAS Birdwalk at UGA's Whitehall Forest in Athens
From: Ed Maioriello <edm(AT)MAIORIELLO.COM>
Date: 1 Apr 2008 9:16am
Come and join us this Saturday, April 5th, at Whitehall forest. We will
meet at 8am at Whitehall Forest along the road in front of the gate past the
mansion, and please come prepared with your binoculars, clothing appropriate
to the weather and practical shoes. Also, please don't be late! We will
have to close the gate behind us once we are in and there will be no way to
get in after that, though you will be able to leave at any time.
As usual, the walks last between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 hours, but one can leave at
any time. The current forecast for Saturday is not particularly favorable,
but we will be out there unless there is lightning - bring that poncho!
If you have any questions please contact me at
fieldtrip(AT)oconeeriversaudubon.org or at 706-208-8504
See you there,
Ed.

Subject: Sibley and Delta
From: Patty McLean <plm108(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 1 Apr 2008 1:13pm
Flying back from Florida for a long weekend birding trip, I picked up the
March issue of Delta's SKY magazine and in it was an article by D. Sibley
on the many challenges birds face when migrating. He mentioned how they
typically return to where they were born/bred and how difficult it is when
they get there and all they can find is a parking lot or barren land.
The trip to Florida was grand with a few new life birds including:
Limpkin
Florida scrub jay (several)
Purple gallinule
Also got EXCELLENT looks at:
Red knot (some with green tags, one labled YE4)
Marbled godwit
Yellow-crowned night herons, a pair building a nest
Osprey, many flying, hunting/feeding or on nests with young
Bald eagle nest with two chicks about to fledge
Painted bunting (male and female)
Ovenbird
Mottled duck
Black-necked stilt
Yellow-throated warbler
Northern parula
Red-cockaded woodpecker
Bachman's sparrow
Swallow-tailed kite flying overhead
Plus, many of the usuals you'd find in Georgia.

Subject: Screech Owl input request-
From: Steve Ehly <steveehly(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 1 Apr 2008 3:42pm
We have 2 screech owl boxes in our backyard in Chamblee, near Chamblee High
School. We have been seeing one gray phase (GP) and one red phase (RP)
intermittently in each of the boxes. Late yesterday we saw the RP in the front
box and the GP in the rear box. The near box is in a pecan tree about 15' off
of the back deck. The rear box is approx. 60' off the back deck in a pear tree.
Both boxes are about 12-15' off the ground and both face approx.
north-northeast. We're trying to figure out if they are nesting or just
roosting in the boxes. I don't like to disturb them, but I check inside the
boxes once every 2 weeks or so to see what's happening (usually on a weekend
afternoon). Sometimes there is an owl in one or both boxes and sometimes not.
I last checked over Easter weekend (3/22 or 3/23) and there were no owls OR
eggs. It's getting late (I think) to be laying eggs and I'm hoping that Tim
Rose, Georgann Schmalz, Art/Lisa Hurt, or anyone else with some screech
owl experience have any ideas.
Regardless of whether we get any owlets it is, of course, wonderful to have
them as guests. I'm confident they nest somewhere in the neighborhood. Each
year, we see and hear them almost anytime from mid-October through sometime in
June. Several years ago (5?) is the only time we know that they nested in the
near box (only had one box at that time) as 2 owlets with one adult were seen
one evening.
Thanks in advance for any input any of you may have!
Good birding!

Subject: Bear Creek Reservoir 4/1/08
From: Mark McShane <eagleeyed(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET>
Date: 1 Apr 2008 9:11pm
Hi All,
I stopped by Bear Creek Reservoir again after work this evening and was
amazed to see 41+ Common Loon on the lake!
Also seen:
Canada Goose
Mallard
Blue-winged Teal
Ring-necked Duck
Greater Scaup
Lesser Scaup
Bufflehead
Red-breasted Merganser (both male and female)
Pied-billed Grebe
American Coot
Double-crested Cormorant
The stunning adult male Greater Scaup which I reported on the 28th was
still there in the same area of the dam! He was conveniently keeping
close company with only a single adult male Lesser Scaup allowing for easy
comparison and making the larger size, smoothly rounded head, larger wider
bill with wider black tip (nail), etc., of the Greater easy to spot and
enjoy! This one has the green gloss on the head.

Greetings all,
I got went out to Little Mulberry Park in Gwinnett County on 1 April for a

the trees into little shadow blobs, the birding was fairly tough going, but
I had a few notable birds.
Blue-winged Teal 4
Osprey 1 caught what looked like a rainbow trout, new for my personal park
list
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 2
Pileated Woodpecker 1, finally I added this bird to my personal park list
Fish Crow 2, trying to get some rainbow trout from the Osprey, new for the
park
Yellow-rumped Warbler 150+
Louisiana Waterthrush 1
Common Yellowthroat 3, newly arrived to the park, all males on territory
Purple Finch 40+, mostly in a big vocal group
American Goldfinch 200+

Subject: Dawson Forest WMA
From: Bill & Condit Lotz <blotz(AT)MINDSPRING.COM>
Date: 1 Apr 2008 11:31pm
GABOers,
Darlene Moore and I birded Dawson Forest WMA (Dawson County) today.
Highlights were 7 species of warblers, FOS Eastern Wood-Pewee, Osprey,
Red-breasted Nuthatch and a pair of Blue-winged Teal. No Red Crossbills
today.
The warblers were:
Yellow-rumped Warbler - just a few
Black-throated Green Warbler - 1 stunning male, singing
Yellow-throated Warbler - 5 or 6, all singing
Pine Warbler - many
Black-and-White Warbler - 2 males, singing
Louisiana Waterthrush - 1 male, singing
Common Yellowthroat - 1 male, singing; 1 chipping
Also worth mentioning were several Tree Swallows occupying gourds that
the DNR has placed in the middle of the waterfowl refuge pond that is
about 1/4 mile from the main parking lot where the WMA kiosk is located.
The gourds (brand new from the looks of it) are hanging from a large
telephone-type pole that has been put up, we assume, just for this
purpose. We also noted at least 7 Great Blue Heron nests (most with
birds on them) at this site.
On the way home we stopped at a farm pond along GA 9, just north of Coal
Mountain (Forsyth County), where there were many Canada Geese, one
domestic goose, one American Coot, a pair of Ruddy Ducks and two pair of
Buffleheads. Also seen there was a Clouded Sulphur butterfly.

Although no crossbills were seen, we are pretty certain to have heard them

We had a many of the same species as previously reported Blue-headed
Vireo, White-eyed Vireo, Tree swallows, Great Blue Herons on nests, Field,
Swamp, Song and White-throated sparrows.
Some of the warblers posed for pictures...
