[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Wild Birds birds, Columbia From: Jerrold Griggs <griggs(AT)math.sc.edu> Date: 10 Nov 2006 9:06am When I visited the Wild Birds store on Lake Murray Blvd. (Hwy. 60) in the Columbia/Irmo area, owner Judy Lamb showed me a window-kill bird that she found recently at the store. It is a "confusing fall warbler". It appears to be a warbler, with a rich dark olive back and crown, no wingbars, except for a hint of a white wing patch, and pale buffy breast, whitish undertail coverts. It is damaged around the eyes, but I think there is a pale whitish line there. I called it a female Black-throated Blue Warbler, but hope other experts in the area take a look at it. The olive color was richer than I realized it could be in this species. The sharp bill also seems long. It is black, but brown at the base. Judy is proud to show off photos of a Selasphorous Hummer that visited the feeder at her Chapin home on Lake Murray for several days last weekend. It hasn't returned the past few days. Concerning a bird I reported previously, the female Rose-breasted Grosbeak that was coming to our house since Oct. 15 was last seen here on Nov. 2. Jerry Griggs, J(AT)sc.edu Columbia, SC
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: CBCs - Charleston and McClellanville CBC info From: Nate Dias <offshorebirder(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 10 Nov 2006 9:50am Steve - sounds like West Pasco is going to be formidable in future years. Tell your Dad that on some SC counts we plan to import birding 'ringers' from out of state and to add to our boat armada :-) In late October I emailed some SC Christmas Bird Count info to a couple of Carolina Bird Club folks, but it has not made its way to the website yet. Since I cc'd Kent on this email, it will doubtless be on the website in no time. Here is info for Charleston and McClellanville: McClellanville CBC - Sunday December 17, 2006 (always the 1st Sunday of the CBC period) Compiler: Nathan Dias - offshorebirder(AT)yahoo.com 843-607-0105 Charleston CBC - Sunday December 31, 2006 Compiler: Burton Moore - BEMIII(AT)yahoo.com 843-853-1100 McClellanville is a lot of fun - we are a largely undeveloped count circle that contains portions of: private plantations, Francis Marion National Forest, Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, Santee Coastal Reserve and Santee Delta WMAs, Tibwin Plantation (USFS) and more. We have multiple boat parties for adventurous types and plenty of car-based birding for laid-back counters. After the count, we retire to a fun place (Palmetto Plantation in recent years) for a post-count food party / oyster roast. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: More Ruby-throateds From: Nate Dias <offshorebirder(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 10 Nov 2006 10:46am There is still an adult female Ruby-throated Hummingbird gracing my neighborhood here in coastal SC. She is spiffy & bright - very fresh looking plumage. She has an all-green crown, short primaries of the proper contour, all indications are an adult female RTHU and not a Black-chinned. Nathan Dias - Charleston, SC PS Had the interesting experience the other day of seeing a Ruby-throated Hummingbird interacting with a Golden-crowned Kinglet. Both birds were vocalizing, as was a nearby Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Small bird's club to be sure. Not everyday one sees those birds together... ------------------------------ Subject: More Ruby-throateds From: Nancy L Newfield <nancy AT CASACOLIBRI.NET> To: Humnet-L(AT)listserv.lsu.edu Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2006 09:11:57 -0600 Mornin' Humnuts, Just checking on the progress of the final stages of Ruby-throated migration. Any still around 'up north'? Yesterday, I banded 4 Ruby-throateds at Margaret Owens's 'Hummingbird Oasis'. At least 1 additional Ruby-throated was present, but he seemed to be a 'flower child' and he was not caught. Among the group was an adult female, very unusual for so late in the migration. ... I would be interested to know who still has Ruby-throateds. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Cheap talk? Check out Yahoo! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Lower Saluda CBC From: "Jason Giovannone" <buteo2808(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 10 Nov 2006 12:59pm This will be the first official year for the Lower Saluda CBC, and it will be run on saturday the 16th of December. I'm hoping to have parties already set, so we can just get to it without a big rendezvous that morning. If your interested in helping out please let me know, and I'll get you paired up with someone. Feeder watchers are always welcome and will be a huge benefit to this mostly urban count area. The area is northwest of Columbia encompassing the Lower Saluda River, about 10 miles of the Broad River, Harbison State Forest, Riverfront Park, Columbia Metropolitan Airport, Riverbanks Zoo, Saluda Shoals Park, and a small portion of Lake Murray to name a few. I would love to have a few people to paddle the Lower Saluda and Broad River portions to get several areas that are inaccessible without a boat. Last year we ended up with 97 species with 4 others for the count week. There will be somewhere (TBD) where everyone can meet up for dinner and talk about the days events. Good Birding!
