Subject: leucistic Short-billed Dowicher
From: "Harry Sell" <sellbirding(AT)ec.rr.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2006 11:16am
Hi All,
Yesterday Dr. Parnell found a small flock of Short-billed Dowichers at the
end of the road at Fort Fisher. There was a leucistic individual with the
group. Dr. Parnell took some photos better than mine, but he rarely posts
and I thought you all (good Southern boy) might like a look. It is funny how
often the bird on the right mimicked his movements... or did he mimic the
other guy? Had lots of fun. Enjoy the photos.

Subject: Sharp-shinned hawk
From: "kaye fenlon" <ktfenlon(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2006 12:33pm
Carolinabirders,
I had a grim discovery this morning... a dead Sharp-shinned hawk.....
probably hit my side deck sliding glass door. Just 2 very small gray
feathers on the window and not a mark on the hawk. Sad!
With bird in hand I studied it a long time to determine if it was indeed a
Sharp-shinned and not a Cooper's. It measured 12" beak to tail tip and has a
square tail with very little white on the tip of the tail feathers. An
indication that it is not a Cooper's according to my bird reference books.
Its beak is smaller than what I think a Cooper's would be too. It has a
beautiful blue gray back with no "cap" differentiation being solid color
from head to nape to its back. Its plumage is absolutely magnificent.
I'll have to try to contact someone at Clemson to see if they can use the
carcass. Also if anyone knows someone locally who could use it please let me
know. Meanwhile it is in my freezer.
I had seen it raiding my yard the past couple of weeks and thought it was a
Sharp-shinned. In the Spring I was seeing a larger hawk and was pretty sure
it was a Cooper's. We also have a pair of Red- shouldered Hawks that have
been around for more than 5 years. Do all of these hawks share the same
territory? I'll have to do more reading!
Now I know why my birds have been so skittish!
Up go the ribbon streamers... I do have bird netting up on the windows that
are closest to the bird feeders. The whole back and side of my house is
glass, so it is really hard to protect all of them.
Have a good birding weekend,
Katie Fenlon

Subject: Piping Plovers at Mason Inlet September
From: "John Ennis" <jennis(AT)ec.rr.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2006 2:31pm
Back on September 2, I photographed three Piping Plover at Mason Inlet at
the end of the Shell Island Sanctuary.
I e-mailed to Sidney Maddock and he assisted with the ID plus he forwarded
to researchers/banders working with the Great Plains and Great Lakes
populations.their information and confirmation is detailed below...
One bird (w/o a band) seems to be an adult in pre-basic molt.
Another is a Great Plains' bird (black upper band) and was banded in
Saskatchewan at Lake Diefenbaker. It is a male (bands 47276) caught on nest
as an adult last summer (nest GP-06-01). His nest hatched about June 12 but
unfortunately and it looks as if the kids were lost in less than a week. I
can add that he was with the non-banded bird but that may mean nothing.
The other bird is a captive-reared Great Lakes chick from this year in the
northern Michigan area, just south of the Upper Peninsula.
My pictures are at:
http://thebusinessbirder.com/PPMasonInlet090206/index.html
I cannot possibly convey the joy of receiving the background on these birds
and urge you to report your Piping Plover sightings and photos...

Subject: Franklin's Gull at Jordan Lake 11/4/2006
From: jspippen(AT)duke.edu
Date: 4 Nov 2006 2:44pm
Birders,
Ricky Davis called me to report a Franklin's Gull that Doug Shadwick
found and Ricky relocated at the swim beach at Ebenezer Point at Jordan
Lake, NC this morning (Saturday Nov 4th). The bird was very approachable,
so may be sick or injured (or just cold!).
Good birding,
Jeff

Hi friends,
Odd combination, I found a Clay-colored Sparrow and a
Snow Bunting this morning on the North dike of North
Pond at Pea Island. Also present was a flock of about
30 White Pelicans.
Looks like things are shaping for a good Wings Over
Water festival next week (as usual)!

From: "Jacob Socolar" <jsocolar(AT)mail.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2006 5:52pm
I birded along Dairyland, Orange Grove, Stanford, and Teer roads in western
Orange County, NC today. Fun birds included White-crowned Sparrow and American
Kestrel at Stanford Rd, and Northern Harrier on Dairyland. I also found really
encouraging numbers of Meadowlarks, with a single flock of about 30-40 plus ten
or so other individuals.
Cheers

In Skyland, NC suburb of Asheville, I went to the Lake Julian Park and
parked near the children's playground. Nothing was on the lake but I
saw a bird way up slowly going in circles. It was an adult Bald Eagle.
I spotted it at 3:58 PM.

Subject: additions to leucistic dowicher
From: "Harry Sell" <sellbirding(AT)ec.rr.com>
Date: 4 Nov 2006 11:11pm
Hi All,
Added a few more photos taken Friday at Fort Fisher to the Dowicher gallery.
Fox (animal), and sparrows, couple of a large 50 member flock of Marbled
Godwits. There are a couple of Clay and imm Chipping photos which show how
hard it is to differentiate between them. And who knows, I may have messed
it up (wouldn't be the first time). Enjoy.
