Weather:
Day started with light NNW winds, but shifted to East at 10 AM (EST), light
at first, but increasing in strength during the day (sea breeze effect),
until 2 PM, when it again shifted toward the Southeast; Cloud cover was
about 95% when watch started, but sky was almost totally clear when watch
ended; temperature was about 16°C at noon, and slowly decreased during rest
of afternoon
Raptor Observations:
Fairly good flight considering wind was east most of day; through most of
day raptors were not flying at any particular height, but later on (after
2:15PM) majority were flying low (1). Highlight of day was adult Peregrine
that flew right over our heads in late afternoon. Highest raptor count was
Merlin (13), and 19/39 birds were seen between 11 AM and 1 PM.
Many Northern Harriers seen coursing the marsh (at least 6 different
birds)
Non-raptor Observations:
Predictions:
Flight may continue

Weather:
Light and variable winds to start, with high cirrus clouds slowly filtering
in over first couple of hours. After about a dozen birds lifting off,
migrants were soon very high. Around noon EDT, a moderate southerly
seabreeze kicked in and raptors - who were presumably passing too high
overhead - were now visible again, and the pace of the count picked up. A
few cumulus clouds moving in late in the day with an approaching cold
front. Otherwise, we can only thank the layer of high, cirrus clouds for
providing us with a backdrop for spotting birds. Winds in the upper levels
were W to SW all day.
Raptor Observations:
A truly fantastic day, with lots of diversity and lots of excitement.
After being shut out all season with ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, a shockingly late
light-morph individual passed over the summit at about 10:30 EDT, providing
fantastic views for the 3 observers present. Really, a remarkably late
date for this species.
A "huge" immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK circled low overhead in the middle of
the afternoon, before gaining altitude and heading to the north. The local
pair was also observed, with the female making a very close pass in the pm.
14 TURKEY VULTURES kettling very high, and very far to the south, were
spotted in the late afternoon. 4-6 local TV's were in view at this time as
well. The birds glided in our direction, passing by in a straight stream,
before kettling up to our east. Birds then broke kettle, and disappeared
to the north. Despite having not counted any TV's in about a month, I
counted these birds. 15 minutes later, they returned from the north,
passed back to the south, and then about half moved back north. TV's
deleted from today's count, but some of these - if not all - were probably
migrants.
A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK at 4:18 EDT was our 3,500th raptor of the season.
Non-raptor Observations:
Fantastic day for non-raptor migrants as well, with a steady passerine
flight through late morning.
50 species heard or seen from the summit today.
Other birds deemed migrating:
Double-crested Cormorant - 179
Unidentified Passerine - 83
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 81
Tree Swallow - 45
Red-winged Blackbird - 28
Purple Finch - 12
Barn Swallow - 9
Chimney Swift - 7
Common Grackle - 7
American Goldfinch - 7
Blue Jay - 6
Bobolink (First of year)- 6
Unidentified Icterid - 8
Canada Goose - 3
Great Blue Heron - 3
Northern Rough-winged Swallow -2
Black-throated Green Warbler - 2
Black-and-white Warbler - 2
Pine Siskin - 2
Cliff Swallow (First of year) - 1
Predictions:
Sunny to mostly sunny skies, light to moderate W or SW. Warm. Seabreeze
should be kept to a minimum. Looks good for hawks, but birds may be high
again.

Weather:
A mix of sun and cloud in the morning gave way to mainly sunny skies in the
afternoon. Winds were light to moderate southeast varying to east in the
morning becoming moderate southeast in the afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
Much of the early movement of the day was timed to the sunnier breaks with
the flight, not surprisngly, becoming much steadier during the PM when the
sun shone steady. There was an improvement in the overall movement of
Buteos along with some good afternoon activity of Harriers and Kestrels. As
usual, though, Sharpies dominated the day.
Non-raptor Observations:
New arrivals included Nashville Warbler and Northern Waterthrush.
