[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Arkansas RBA--June 19, 2008 From: DeLynn Hearn <delynnh(AT)IWON.COM> Date: 19 Jun 2008 10:19pm -RBA *Arkansas *Statewide *June 19, 2008 *ARST19.06.08 -Species Mentioned Least Tern American Avocet Black-necked Stilt Bewick’s Wren CERULEAN WARBLER Willow Flycatcher Grasshopper Sparrow King Rail Laughing Gull -Transcript Welcome to the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert for June 19, 2008, sponsored by the Audubon Society of Central Arkansas (ASCA). ASCA meets at 7:00pm the second Thursday of each month at the John Gould Fletcher Library, located at 823 Buchanan St. on the corner of H and Buchanan Streets in Little Rock. From around the state recent sightings are: A Yellow-Crowned Night Heron is present on a gravel bar in Flint Creek, located on Dawn Hill East Road, about a mile west of Hwy. 59 in western Benton County. At Treadway's Minnow Farms in Prairie County, a first summer Laughing Gull is being seen. On Hwy 16, turn onto the road into Piney Creeks WMA. Drive South on that road about 1.6 miles to where a CERULEAN WARBLER (about 100 yards away) was heard. In Benton Co., Bewick’s Wren was seen on the county roads west of Wedington. The directions are: Take Hwy 16 west. Stay on Hwy 16 but about a mile or so past where Hwy 224 splits off from Hwy 16 and past Chambers Springs Rd there is a Walker Rd . Turn left on Walker Rd (south). Approximately .8 miles down the road is an unmarked street that will turn left (east.) The first house on the left has a huge post oak in front. The address is 20351 Fullerton Rd. The name on the mailbox is England. At Cherry Bend in Franklin Co. on the trails up the hill past the Stone House CERULEAN WARBLER can be seen and heard. The Disorganized Bird Club (DOBC – Originally dis-organized by JoAnne Rife of Harrison, Arkansas) spent time on Baker Prairie and the Lone Oak Dairy/Wolfe Springs Road loop in Boone County, Arkansas. At least four Willow Flycatchers were seen and heard. Also, at least two, possibly three Grasshopper Sparrows were documented on Baker Prairie, which is the first recorded there in several years. At Bald Knob NWR a Least Tern is being seen near the grain bins on the refuge in the muddy field just west of the grain bins. Two American Avocets are still on the refuge and Black-necked Stilts appear to be nesting. Also, a King Rail was at Bald Knob NWR. Thanks for calling the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert. Your contributions make the Rare Bird Alert possible. If you would like to leave a message, please wait for the chirp. Good Birding!
