Three adult Little Blue Herons just flew by outside my window. Not an
expected yardbird, but I will take it anyway. Probably headed for the
river which is several miles to the west.

Subject: Fw: The Climate Security Act is vitally important/even if
big oil says not to worry

Jack...
I believe I, for one, would like to see the facts regarding this film,
"Rather than go into a long refutation of the supposed scientific facts in
this propaganda film"
Facts, proven facts: .... attack the facts, not the people, please!

Cheryle,
I will send you, off-list, two examples of the poor science in the documentary.
The facts are that these people are backed by big oil and their reports are not
peer-reviewed. This should be enough to convince us that they should not taken
seriously.
If anyone else is interested in what I send to Cheryle just let me know and I'd
be glad to share it.
“I wonder what the Maori who killed the last moa said. Perhaps the polynesian
equivalent of ‘Your ecological models are untested, so conservation measures
would be premature’? No, he probably just said ‘Jobs not birds’ as he
delivered the last blow.”
Jared Diamond
This will be my last posting on climate change for a time since it is doubtful
that we can do much in this area to save habitat for birds and people until
after the distraction of the election.

I heard this bird here at my house somewhere in the trees. It was 3:43 =
p.m., June 8, 2008. I have NO idea what it looks like. I heard it, and =
pulled out my cell phone to record it "talking."
Thanks.

From: "George R. Hoelzeman" <uiogd(AT)ARKANSAS.NET>

The problem with "facts" in films or literature which is largely propoganda, is
that it is virtually impossible to refute fiction. Since the "writings" of the
two
individuals named in the prior critique have never submitted their "research" to
peer reviewed journals, there is not much one can do with them. One can
only point out the lack of credibility on the part of the "scientists" and leave
it at that.
Also, "facts" like truth, are remarkably maleable in the hands of propogandists.
Such "facts" evolve into their own "truth" which spins off its own literature,
birthing new claims based on the original spurious information ultimately
representing "truths" that the devotee can point to in support of the original
position.
In the end, like conspiracy theories, propoganda is virtually impossible to
oppose because of the quasi-religious attachment held by its devotees. Thus, if
the protagonist of the propoganda is not credible, their "findings" need not be
considered.
Authentic scientists use various methods to check, recheck, question, recheck,
verify and review all data. If the scientist is reputable, one can examine
their writings with confidence. Myself, I'd rather read something from someone
reputable and respected rather than some opinionated polemicist.
Thusfar, the IPCC material seems most reliable.

I forwarded your string to Joe Fox with TNC, and this is his response regarding
who owns what timberland in AR.
Hope this is helpful.

IP no longer owns any timberland in Arkansas or hardly anywhere else in the US.
IP made a series of sales over a few years. Plum Creek did buy some of the IP
lands, but not a large percentage. The vast majority went to two companies
TimberStar SW and Resource Management Services. Both are know as "TIMO"
managers. TIMO=Timberland Investment Management Organization It is run like a
mutual fund for timberland. TimberStar has already sold all of its holdings in
Arkansas to Hancock Insurance for a large profit. TNC bought about 8,000 acres
two years ago from IP and still owns about half of that. The balance went or is
going to state agencies like ANHC and AFC. IP is not a player in the forests
of Arkansas. Plum Creek is the largest private landowner in the state.
Thanks,
Joe

A friend of mine in Maine once told me some stories about Plum Creek's
activities there. Plum Creek is the largest landowner in that state.
For interesting reading, go to Google and search for "Plum Creek" Maine
forest. Later also maybe add lynx and bald eagle.

Traveling down Colonel Maynard rd. just outside of Scott Ar. today I
counted 39 Mississippi Kites swooping and swirling in one particular area.
The activity seemed to be centered over a pecan orchard about a mile south
of Hwy 165. This is the first time I have seen this many together.
