[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Pine Siskin From: Sherry Stansbery <greatblu(AT)SOUTHSHORE.COM> Date: 2 Jun 2008 11:06am We were out of town from May 16-19 and when we returned all the wonderful rose-breasted grosbeaks, Baltimore orioles and pine siskins were gone even though there was still seed left. This morning I went out on the back porch to have a cup of coffee and think about the day ahead when a pine siskin landed on the porch railing and sat there for at least 5 minutes eating the sunflower seeds that Ted had put on the banister. I really haven't had much time to spend birding the past few weeks so the siskin could have been here all that time and I just overlooked it. Anyway......I am very glad it is still hear and hope it spends the summer with us. I also have been hearing a wood thrush early in the morning for the past week. They have the most beautiful song and that's a wonderful way to start the day! Sherry Stansbery Boone Co. between Harmon & Zinc
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: spring reports for AAS database From: Joe Neal <jneal(AT)FS.FED.US> Date: 2 Jun 2008 11:37am For those of you who submit spring records for inclusion in the AAS database (this is not the same as ebird), I wish to remind you that the spring season (March, April, May) is due now. These records should be posted using the online record form created by Lyndal York, available on the AAS website. Before typing in records PLEASE read his instructions carefully and try to avoid the typing errors/issues that foul up how your typing goes into the database--careless typing makes more work for everyone and could compromise your record. After you type in your data, please read it over carefully before you submit. Thanks! JOSEPH C. NEAL, biologist Poteau Ranger District, Ouachita NF P.O. Another little treat for the morning were 3 singing Wood Thrushes in the neighborhood west of the stadium. The only other shorebirds I saw were Killdeer and BN Stilts. At Treadway's Fish Farm I saw a late Dunlin, a very late Eared Grebe, and a Black Tern. In one pond there were several lingering ducks including: Gadwall, Ruddy, Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked, Shoveler, and Canvsback. Several White-rumps and Semi-sands, with some Pecs and Leasts mixed in as well. I also saw a Red-winged Blackbird. Good birding! Dick Baxter ----DELETED text/html MIME SECTION----

This was the second flock in recent days. The difference yesterday was that the flock was higher and we were closer to home. Skip and I made a run for it and got to our yard barely in time to add yard bird #112. The whole list, with dates, is at http://www.arkansasbirder.net/Arkansas_Birder/Yard_List.html . We'll meet at 7 AM (while the weather is still cool) at the Harrison Middle School parking lot located on Goblin Drive here in Harrison. We'll bird Baker Prairie, then make our "usual" loop in Boone Co. It would be a mostly grassland bird trip and over by noon, if not before. Target birds are Willow Flycatcher and Grasshopper Sparrows. Vern Human spotted 2 Willow Flycatchers on the prairie during the IMBD in May. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: Pine Siskin From: Dale Provost <dprovost(AT)SBCGLOBAL.NET> Date: 2 Jun 2008 7:05pm There is a Great-crested Flycatcher nesting in our Martin house again- same apartment as last year. The nasty House Sparrows are not in the house this year, so the Flycatchers may have an easier time of it. I did see one of our female Downeys feeding a male on the suet tree, and a Brown Thrasher feeding a youngster, so we do have babies fledged. I'll miss the variety of migration, but nesting season has its rewards. After yesterday's really strong blow we found a small nest down in our neighbor's yard. Must be something of nuthatch size. I searched and found no eggs or young. I'm not good at nests, so will bring it to the next ASCA meeting for ID. Craig put it on our arbour, but there has been no interest in it, so maybe (hopefully) it was deserted. We also had a scene yesterday reminiscent of the long grocery lines that we have when there is a warning of bad weather around here: Right after the strong winds, five (count 'em, five) woodpeckers were on my suet tree at the same time: four Downeys (two male and two female) and one red Bellied male, all knocking back the suet as fast as they could. And a N. Flicker came soon after. Krogers when there is a snow forecast, is what it was!
