[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Swainson's Hawk, Painted Bunting & more - Chesney Prairie From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Rhonda_Asencio?= <rasencio1(AT)SBCGLOBAL.NET> Date: 25 May 2008 2:49pm My husband, Paul, and I had the good fortune to attend the NWA Audobon Society's field trip to Chesney Prairie on Saturday. After an hour delay due to heavy rain, Joe Woolbright gave us an overview of the restoration efforts of the Prairie and pointed out several species of native plants and wildflowers, including the Oklahoma Grass Pink Orchid, (which is currently in bloom). With the guidance of Joe Neal, the group was able to note 46 bird species. Most notable (according to Joe) was the SWAINSON'S HAWK, which gave us a good show as it circled over us off and on for at least an hour. Here is the complete list that Joe Neal asked me to report: Swainson's Hawk Red-tailed Hawk American Kestrel Northern Bobwhite Killdeer Mourning Dove Yellow-billed Cuckoo's Chimney Swift Ruby-throated Hummingbird Red-headed Woodpecker Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Eastern Wood-Pewee Acadian Flycatcher Willow Flycatcher (?) Eastern Kingbird Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Loggerhead Shrike Warbling Blue Jay American Crow Bank Swallow Barn Swallow Carolina Wren Eastern Bluebird American Robin Northern Mockingbird Brown Thrasher European Starling Common Yellow-throat Wilson's Warbler Northern Cardinal Indigo Bunting Painted Bunting Dickcissel Red-winged Blackbird Eastern Meadowlark Common Grackle Great-tailed Grackle Brown-head Cowbird Orchard Oriole House Finch American Goldfinch House Sparrow Turkey Vulture Canada Goose After Chesney Prairie, my husband and I decided to check out the EAGLE WATCH AREA in GENTRY and noted these birds: Tree Swallow Great Egret Eastern Bluebird Red-headed Woodpecker Indigo Bunting Belted Kingfisher Great Heron Green Heron American Coot Eastern Kingbird Great-tailed Grackles Cardinals, Robins, Starlings Turkey vultures, Red-tailed Hawk We then drove to my parent's house which is past Gentry, toward Colcord, Oklahoma. We were able to add Summer Tanager and Great Crested Flycatcher to the day's list. I have to say that even though I personally did not see every bird noted at Chesney Prairie, it was still my greatest bird day (so far) as I added several birds to my life list! The highlight of my day was when I told Joe Neal that I really wanted to see a Painted Bunting, and he whipped out his MP3 player and was able to "call" one up! Hey Joe - next trip I'm asking for an IBWP!!!! It was a great day!! Rhonda Asencio Springdale
