Yes, they were released at Holla Bend NWR. There were 13 total and we
get reports of all 13 either on Holla Bend or on neighboring private
lands.

I'm assuming these are some of the "released" birds. Does anyone know
where they were released?

Subject: Super Squirrel
From: Dennis Braddy <dmbraddy(AT)MAC.COM>
Date: 13 May 2008 10:15am
After months of relative calm the stalemate has been broken. There's a
new squirrel in town. Not content to forage on the mix we scatter for
ground feeders like the other squirrels, Super Squirrel (SS) has, on
successive days, laid waste to one hummingbird feeder and mounted a
successful attack on the birdcam feeder. Yesterday, SS shimmied up the
shepherd's hook, bit the plastic covers off the hummingbird feeder
ports, tipped the feeder with its weight, and swilled the stream of
sugar water. Today, SS demonstrated his ability to leap tall buildings
in a single bound. Faster than a speeding bullet he shot to the top of
the barrel baffle and raided the black oil sunflower seeds. This means
war!
Update: Adding a barrel baffle to the hummingbird feeder's shepherd's
hook has shored up our left flank. The wily SS has counterattacked our
right flank leaping atop the baffle on our secondary seed/peanut
butter feeder array. It's looking pretty grim right now; SS seems to
be passing his super powers on to the other squirrels. They are
repeatedly attacking our perimeter and breeching the feeder array
defenses. If we don't come up with effective countermeasures soon...
Wait! I have a plan...

Allsopp Park is hopping this morning, both before and after the storm
cell went through. Samantha Holschbach, Chad Fisher and I came
across an active flock of chickadees, titmice, and warblers. We
picked up life-, state-, or year-birds for everyone. Highlights:
Swainson's Warbler - 1, first singing from a patch of cane
Canada Warbler - 1, singing near the clearing
Mourning Warbler - 1, along the creek near the parking lot
Golden-winged Warbler - 1
also multiples of
Chestnut-sided Warbler
American Redstart
Magnolia Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
Tennessee Warbler

Just you wait until you get a visit from Monster Raccoon. I had successfully
"baffled" the squirrels using the barrel baffle around a pipe support but I was
invaded by raccoons who were able to bear hug the barrel, climb it and wreck the
feeders.
After adding a dome atop the barrel baffle I thought I had him stopped, until I
flipped on the light in the yard and saw the problem. One guy was so big, he
could hold on to the baffle, reach over the dome and grab the pole. Well, enter
the only barricade that works on squirrels and raccoons; the witch's hat. It's
called 'Squirrel Away Baffle' and it looks like a witch's hat. It can also be
placed on a chain hanging from a limb. The one's intended for hanging on a
chain, are available from the Farmer's Coop on Col. Glenn (the end can be sawed
off for use on a 1/2" black iron pipe) and Wild Birds Unlimited have them with
the end already cut off for use on their pole system.
Using these baffles I have eliminated the barrel baffle and just use the 1/2"
pipe to support my feeders. Note: you should use a screw type hose clamp above
and below the tip of the baffle to keep the critters from tipping it on, or
pushing it up, the pole. Of course this isn't necessary on the chain because
you want it to tip (and flip).
Good luck Dennis and remember, the average squirrel can jump 4 feet vertically
(apparently your's can do better) and 10 feet laterally.

A good squirrel dog will do the trick. Pass the biscuits, please! (We have
two gift dogs...what you get when you live in the country)...one's a redtick
coonhound and the other's a feisty-terrier-hound mix, nary a squirrel gets
in our yard...well, okay, maybe at night when the dogs are asleep the flying
squirrels and the deer herd make off with any seeds left on the feeders).

Judy and all,
The cavalry rides to the rescue! At the most opportune moment, during
a temporary lull in the action (I think Super Squirrel (SS) and his
minions were regrouping for an all-out attack), Pat returned home.
Sweeping around their weak left flank, rolling over and crushing their
line of defense (just like Little Round Top), she raised the barrel
baffles on both feeder arrays by a foot, while I first shouted orders
and then huzzahs from the safety of my command bunker, er, sitting area.
Coda: Has my brilliant plan (do nothing until Pat came home) worked?
Will SS turn rout into victory with his own dastardly plan? Only time
will tell. For now the battlefield is quiet. Too quiet...

How funny! I had a female fox squirrel named Shirl here a few years ago who
broke 5 squirrel-proof bird feeders inside of a month! If she couldn't get seed
from them hanging onto them or from a tree, she'd twist the feeder until it
bent, broke, or otherwise was rendered useless and she's feast to her stomach's
content. I would actually watch her examining a new feeder, first from above,
then from the ground. She's bop it with her foot to determine the arc it swings
in or whatever MIT educated squirrels do to formulate a plan. I doubt Shirl's
still alive but she's taught her offspring well. Instead of 2 super squirrel, I
have about 5 now. Also, Eastern Grays have recently moved in and are adding to
the fun. I finally found 2 truly squirrel-proof feeders. One is steel with a
latch and is designed ingeniously so that the little stinkers cannot get into it
no matter what. The other is a tube feeder I got at Wild BIrds unlimited that
hangs just far enough from a
branch that SS can't reach it and has a weight controlled mechanism that closes
all the feeding ports when SS jumps on the feeder. Both have survived numerous
extended attacks. Right now my dog is trying to rid my yard of about 10
squirrels and failing miserably.

I, too, have met my share of Super Squirrels.
I have one of those feeders that closes the ports when the squirrel jumps on
it.
Spring loaded. The lid is also held in place by springs. When the baffles close
the lid is exposed. I looked out one day to see a squirrel had pried up the
lid and had its head jammed into the opening. It could only eat so far down.
One problem here at my house is the ground is so rocky that I can't get a
shepherds hook sunk into the ground to be free standing. It's like trying to
drive re bar into cement. I have my hook tied to a post. It is a squirrel
magnet. I have taken to hanging two of my feeders from nails under the
carport. Now I just have family whacking their heads on the feeders when they
come over. One ingenious squirrel was able to get up in the rafters under the
carport and knock a feeder off the nail.
I left the freestanding cast iron laundry clothes pole in Illinois. Presumably
it was sold at the garage sale when I moved, it was very cool, big mistake on my
part if its gone. It it's still at my house in Alton I will be figuring out a
way to get it here. It's not that tall but I can put a baffle on it.

Tuesday evening about 6:30pm was a very strange mourning dove. It was on the
sidewalk besides Rudy Tuesday's driveway. It was the body and head of a
mourning dove, and a white ring of about 3 inches wide around its neck with a
line of black above it close to the bill and eye. Leif said it could be a
